I love an early morning walk. After 6 months lying on the sofa, feeling terrible, it feels so good to be out in the sunshine. We're lucky to have some lovely walks right on our doorstep.

🌞 Another heatwave is on its way, with temperatures over 30 degrees for a few days at the end of the week. Great for trips to the beach, not so great for wildlife!

After the driest July since 1935 there's not a lot of water around. Please help the visitors to your garden by leaving out a shallow dish of fresh water, ideally in the shade and somewhere you can keep an eye on it. You can help flying insects too by adding a few pebbles to create small islands for them to rest on.

Last year, nurse Laura and her dog Jenny demonstrated the 5 second rule! This post had over 1 million view so we thought best to share again with the hot weather staying 🌞

As it hots up over the summer remember the 5 second rule!

Put your hand (or the back of your hand as it’s more sensitive) on the pavement - If you can’t hold it there comfortably for five seconds because it’s too hot, it’s too hot for your dogs paws for walks 🐾

Don't you just love an ice lolly on a hot day?
Our dogs love a cold treat as well.
What about trying these ideas?
Give your pet chicken and beef broth ice cubes.
Freeze mashed banana and peanut butter inside a toy Kong.
Chill carrots in the freezer and feed to your pet as a healthy treat.

As the temperature remains so high, it's advisable to walk dogs in the cooler hours of early mornings or evenings.
Remember, the 5second test - if it’s too hot to hold the back of your hand on the pavement then it’s too hot for your dogs paws (even after peak hours the pavement may still be too hot)
If you need someone to let your dogs out in the garden during the day, then send me a message.

As a previous owner of a nervous rescue dog, I often had problems with unleashed dogs approaching. Which would result in my dog becoming stressed.
Here's a quick guide to explain why not to allow your unleashed dog to approach another dog on a leash.

The British Hedgehog Preservation society have put together some ideas to help your local wildlife.

Following on from last weeks post on ticks. Ticks will bite and feed on your dog or cat for up to a few days, and drop off once they've had enough. During this time, it's possible the tick could give your pet a disease.

Ticks carry a serious bacterial infection called Lyme disease. Dogs, cats and humans can all get Lyme disease, although it's uncommon in cats. Symptoms in cats and dogs include:

Depression
Loss of appetite
Fever
Lameness
Swollen and painful joints
Swollen lymph nodes
Lethargy
Treatment for Lyme disease

If you catch it early, Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. If you think your dog or cat has Lyme disease, contact your vet, who will run tests and start treatment

With these high temperatures that we've been having, it's important to know the signs of heatstroke to look out for and what to do in the event your dog shows any signs.
As a guide do not walk your dog when the temperature is over 25%.
Your dog will not die from missing a walk or waiting until cooler evening temperatures. The hot pavement can cause serious damage to your dog’s paw pads and the exposure to the severe heat put them at extreme risk of heatstroke. Do not take your dog out in the car, unless absolutely necessary. Reschedule the dog groom or visit to a pet food shop. Do not leave them out in a sunny garden all day, allow plenty of access to cool shade and cool water.
If you notice any signs of heat stroke, contact your vet immediately and move your dog to a cool location and encourage them to drink tepid water.

Instead of a walk, why not keep their brains busy with enrichment activities. Such as a long lasting chew, hiding treats around the house for them to find, learning a new trick or command, advancing a previously learnt command. Mental stimulation is just as good as a walk

Ticks are a common problem when walking through long grass. These parasites drop onto your dogs coat as they brush through the grass.

Tick bites can carry diseases, such as Lymes disease, so it's important to remove them straight away. When removing a tick, make sure not you don't squeeze the tick's body or leave the head in. If you squeeze its body or leave the head in, this can push blood back into your pet, which will increase the chance of them getting a disease.

The best way to remove is using a specially designed tick tool, which is shaped to get under the tick's body and twist off, without squeezing.
Don't try to remove with your fingers or burn it off.

Stop ticks from biting your pet by using a tick treatment that either kills or repels them if they attach themselves. There are different types of treatments, such as spot on treatments and tablets. Ask your vet for the best tick treatment.
I always used Bravecto on my dogs and this was always effective.

Be careful! Never use dog tick medicine on cats or vice versa. Some dog tick treatments contain chemicals that are toxic to cats, and can even be fatal to them.
