Dolly, Molly, Monty, Alfie, Teddy, Milo, Penny, Rosie & Nellie 🐾

Just the two walks today as we missed a few faces. We're sending get well hugs to Nando who's off recovering from his injury 💕

First walkers if the day and Monty was pleased to have Alfie to run around with who kept pace with him through the long grass. Molly and Teddy were rolling buddies and Dolly enjoyed keeping me company 🌿

Last walkers of the day and we switched things up a bit with the grouping which went really well. Nellie was a brilliant pairing with Milo which intern got Penny and Rosie keen to enjoy a game with them too. Penny did very well when we bumped into some familiar faces for us but not for her. Hats off to her for being brave and taking notes from the other dogs 🙌🏻

Thank you for another cracking week weather aside 😅

Chaotic scenes to start the day. Only joking! We had the small old boys and gals to kick start our Thursday morning fun so we have a leisurely bimble at their pace. Not only were we spoilt because the rain held off for the entire walk but we also didn't see a soul 🙌🏻

Mid morning soggy folks and we definitely got caught in the lovely June weather. Bruce, already wet decided rolling in the grass wasn't going to make him any worse off. Teddy wallowed in the muddy puddle whilst Henry did what spaniels do best, cannon ball 💦

Unsurprisingly there aren't many pics from our last walk of the day. Rusty was less than impressed with the biblical downpour. Milo and Bishop were living their best lives whilst Ted had a chomp on some of the long grass 🌿

A very soggy one to kick off the day. Hugo was full of beans and didn't mind the rain at all. He was in a very playful mood and wanted a game with me. The pugs were in a foul mood because they were in their coats and subjected to the weather 😅

Mid morning walkers and we had more of the day. The dun did briefly show it's face for five minutes but promptly hid back away. Ziggy, Nellie and Louie grouped off to have a good game of chase with each other despite the length of the grass 🌿

Last walkers of the day and we enjoyed some more soggy weather but the boys didn't care and Bruce enjoyed a good roll in the wet grass. Winston had fun carrying about with Keith and Teddy kept telling me off as he wanted a treat 🗣️

All the weather today made for fun dodging the showers 🌧️

Lots of fun in the long grass for our first walkers of the day. Everyone was full of beans and enjoyed jumping through the grass. I hid some treats which kept everyone noses very busy 🌿

Last walkers of the day and Corbyn enjoyed a roll in anything he could find. Penny has become very confident around the big chap now which is now to see and Indie joined us for a swpa before his holibobs 🙌🏻

That's more like it! Nice bit of rain to scare the Fairweather's away 🙌🏻

The long grass has reached heights which proved excellent fun for Optimus to navigate so ok the lead he stayed. Monty & Cleo had great fun jumping around in it like rabbits 🐇

Mid morning boys club and we went through the fields into the woods and popped back. Webber, Bruce and Indie all loved a roll around in the grass whilst Henry and Louie enjoyed picking up the scents in the woods 🌲

Last walkers of the and we got very soggy indeed. Milo found himself a nice rock, Bishop found a nice scent to hunt out. Teddy had a very soggy roll. Keith and Rusty had a game of chase whilst we brushed up on our recall 🙌🏻

A lovely cool start to the day with the trio and the pigs. Monty had a lovely chilled bimble which we've been working on as he usually likes to go full throttle but we've been teaching him slow and steady wins the race. Molly loved running through the long grass whilst the smaller folk were slightly less impressed 🌿

Mid morning and it quickly became a bit of a humid boy so we headed into the stream for a bit of a dip. Surprise, surprise for me today as Bishop finally succumbed to Nellie's charms after months of her trying her hardest to win him over to no avail he had some lovely play with her which he initiated. I'm usually Bishop's friend so Nellie was very privileged indeed. Excellent re all from Indie today despite the grass being cut so lots of scents keeping him busy. Alfie enjoyed racing himself 🥹

Last walkers of the day and all sorts went on. Initially I thought I'd come across a lost dog and was preparing everyone for on lead safety whilst working out the logistics of catching said dog. Alas it was only a ruddy HUGE fox carrying it's lunch. Everyone got popped on the lead until he noticed us and off he went. Ticked something else off the bucket list today and all. Fireman carry a spaniel through the brambles in an attempt to get back to the van and safety quicker ✅

Nando looks to be having some trouble with an old injury and it became apparent we needed to get him home and off to the vets asap, whilst in the middle of the woods with three others furry friends. Suffice to say I made the call to get us off the walk as quickly as possible but when you have a dog who can barely walk speed is not forthcoming. So up Nando went into my arms, think officer and a gentleman 😅

Beckie 0 - Brambles 1

On that note we hope Nando has some good news at the vets. Everyone has a good weekend and wish me luck running my first ever 10k race now minus the top layer of my leg skin 🙌🏻🍀

Ladies and baked beans, not going to lie that heat absolutely crept up on me by the last walk so cheers met weather for doing me and the doggos dutty 🥵

Much cooler start to the day with Boris and the piglets. The old gals bowed out of this morning's jolly at Saltram as they've been a bit lethargic in the heat as you can imagine. We however had a lovely shaded walk at The dell and had some fun navigating the cyclists with a deaf boy and a blind boy. Wonderful recall from Boris who is a dab hand at understanding my hand signals. Not so easy with the blindest boy though hence the lead 🥹

Mid morning yompers and they were made up with how long the grass has gotten. Everyone enjoyed reenacting the raptor scene from Jurassic Park today. I can't be sure but I'm sure Henry was under the influence of an illegal drug and Bruce saw to it that the walk remained less peaceful for anyone in a five mile radius 📢

Our last walkers of the day were beseeched to remain as calm and chill as possible as the heat had well and truly made itself known. We headed to the woods armed with my backpack full of water and my clanky water bowls. Regular rest stops for water in the shade was just the ticket and Teddy was very appreciative of this not so much of the powerhose of water back at the van 😅

Earlier rises in the woods. Hugo found a nice rock and enjoyed a little wallow in the muddy puddle with his brother. Cloe was full of beans so we worked on giving her some more calming things to keep safe in the heat 🙌🏻

Last walkers and off we went to another woods. Teddy enjoyed a roll in the mud. Nellie and Louie had a bit of a game but soon settled into a more chilled walk. Bruce was happy to conserve his energy with a gentle plod and keep me company 🌿

Another early start today to keep everyone comfy 🙌🏻

First walkers in the woods and we had a nice calm jolly. We bumped into some folks that needed space and the guys were exceptional. Bobby enjoyed having a mooch after Tommy who loves the woods. Bruce and Teddy kept a slower pace with me as not to overexert themselves 🤌🏻

Last walkers of the day and we went for a little dip. Louie and Corbyn were right in there whilst Penny was a bit more reserved about her dip and kept it to a little paddle 💦

“Dogs in hot countries do just fine”.

A message about the heat from Nelly Noodle Nam.

Please share for other dog lovers 🐶🥰

I was born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2019 where I continued to live until 2023, when I moved to Warminster with my mum. When I arrived in England, my coat was very thin and I was shivering a lot. I had never seen snow before and I did not like it (still don’t TBH).

You see, in Hanoi, temperatures regularly exceed 40c with over 95% humidity; it’s hot hot. Like walking around in a sweaty oven hot. And, because I was born there, I am able to regulate my temperature much better than a dog that was born in England, for example. Also in Vietnam, temperatures don’t often go much less than 20c. In England, we regularly see jumps or drops of 20c+ in less than 24h which means none of us (dogs included) have had a chance to acclimatise to the heat.

Since living in Warminster, my coat has grown thicker so I shiver less, and my mum has bought me a whole wardrobe of coats. But I am still genetically different from dogs who were born here.

Firstly, I am essentially less domesticated than most England born dogs because my direct ancestors were street dogs. Because of this, I have some of those survival instincts. That means I am better able to make choices which will keep me alive, but also means I am considered more ‘anxious’ or ‘alert’ than an English dog.

A fully domesticated English born dog, like a spaniel, labrador or corgi, would be less likely to survive in the wild than me. That is not just because of my life experiences (though they do help) it is genetic instincts. That means, on hot days like today, those English dogs may choose to go for a walk or lay in the sun, when what they really need is to go inside. It’s not their fault, they have always been domesticated so their survival instincts aren’t as strong as mine.

So when humans say “if they didn’t want to be out in it they wouldn’t be” that isn’t strictly true. Our dog brains are less developed than human brains, that’s why we need you to take care of us. Sometimes that means making choices for us, like you would for a child who doesn’t want to have suncream put on. Because our brains are quite similar to a 3 year old child actually, and yours are better able to choose for us sometimes.

Secondly, while we are talking about genetics, mine are much better suited to a warm climate. I don’t drink very much water (never have) and I rarely pant, even in the heat. This is because of my physiology and biology, but also my early experiences living in Hanoi for 4 years. I have spent more of my life in a tropical, climate than a cold one.

So when people make posts saying dogs shouldn’t be walked in this heat, they aren’t wrong. However, it is a bit more complicated than saying all dogs should not go out at all in the heat and depends on many factors. Here are some factors that can contribute to whether a dog is more or less likely to get heatstroke:

🐾Breed and genetics - some breeds are more or less susceptible
🐾Country of origin - were they born here?
🐾Health conditions - underlying health conditions make dogs more susceptible
🐾Age - older dogs or puppies more susceptible
🐾Size of dog - small and larger dogs more susceptible
🐾Weight of dog - overweight or underweight more susceptible

Heatstroke kills dogs, often, and this will only get worse as our climate changes. The symptoms of heatstroke are:
🐾Heavy panting
🐾Excessive drooling
🐾Reddened or sticky gums
🐾Restlessness - this one is important as you think your dog is bugging you to go for a walk, when actually they may be starting to experience heatstroke.

If you see signs of heatstroke, get them somewhere cool, use a fan, cold water submersion (for otherwise healthy dogs) and call the vet urgently.

If you aren’t sure whether your dog will be ok in the heat, it’s better to skip a walk than to risk their life. You can test the pavement temperature with the back of your hand to make sure we don’t burn our paws. Also, early morning and late evening walks are safer.

So next time someone says "dogs in hot countries do just fine," remember Nelly. Born in Hanoi, built for the heat, and I know when to stay inside. Your English spaniel? Maybe not so much. Keep them safe this summer, and when in doubt, leave them out... of the heat, that is.
