π΄IMPORTANT POST, PLEASE READ π΄
I don't really know how to start this post, I guess I just write it as though I am thinking it in my head.
An incident happened this week that has knocked the socks off me and has made the rest of the week a real challenge as a dog groomer.
My job is SO much more than just giving dogs a hair cut. My absolute number one priority is making sure they are SAFE with me to allow me to then continue with grooming.
Choosing your groomer and staying with your groomer is so important to your dog. They learn the process, they learn to trust, they grow confidence and they learn to enjoy it. If you change the groomer all the time your dog has to start that process all over again.
Grooming is an overwhelming process for dogs, they have to leave their owner which they all hate but when they have that confidence within their trusted groomer then it's a peaceful experience for them.
Puppies MUST be introduced the minute they are allowed out to walk, this can't be rushed especially if they are nervous pups. You know that saying "trust the process" this is so key. The same goes for rescue dogs, it's all about building trust and confidence together.
If I suggest more visits or shorter more frequent visits it's because your dog has shown me they are scared, nervous and not ready to go to the next step of grooming. If I ask you to practice things at home with your dog then that's because your dog has shown me they can't handle certain things/noises within the salon. I don't just make things up for a laugh. If you are not willing to reinforce these things at home then I am not willing to work with you or your dog.
If your dog has a tendency to growl, snap even bite it is absolutely imperative that you tell your groomer. It is not fair that a groomer has to experience that. Our job is difficult enough working with very sharp objects and moving animals. Every dog has different tolerance levels and over my 6 and a half years I think I have done pretty well to remember who can't handle what and I always take my time to make sure I don't irritate your dog to cause them to lash out. As a groomer you must be switched on at all times, there are no easy days in this job.
Thank you for taking the time to read all these important thoughts in my head. If I haven't got back to you this week I will, my head has just been a little bit pickled but be sure I will return all messages and further appointments ASAP.
