Dog around Sheep... week3/session 2/part 3

08/05/2026

Friday is the only day where ‘I’ll do it next week’ sounds less like procrastination and more like strategic planning.
Oh ... and happy 100th birthday Sir David Attenborough.

Today, I learnt that beer provides around 15% of our Vitamin B6 requirement. That's a requirement of around 6 pints per day ... Sadly, whilst it has huge health benefits and is known to cure all manner of ailments, including limb loss, whiskey offers no nutritional value whatsoever. (I think this is fake news)

Sshhh... you know we like natural remedies here at Allywags, so here's one for fleas & ticks.
1 x handful of fresh mint
20 x cloves
½ cup of apple cider vinegar
Put into a cup of boiling water in a pan and simmer for 15 mins
Once cool, pour into a spray bottle and you're good to go with your minty, clovy smelling dog.

I always enjoy talking about training and behaviour however, it is widely accepted that if you put 100 dog trainers in a room that they will all disagree on the way to train a behaviour.
One thing they shouldn't disagree on is the requirement to proof the behaviour that you're training. Many of us employ the 3Ds (Duration-Distance-Distraction).
For eg. Training a sit.
Duration: you want to build the behaviour so that your dog sits until they are released from that position.
Distance: you want to be able to walk away from the dog and have them remain in the desired position.
Distraction: you want them to remain seated whilst you dance the robot in a Peter Crouch style.
Once you're content that the dog has learnt the behaviour under those 3 criteria then it's time to up the ante... more Duration, more distance, more distractions.
Enjoy the sunshine y'all.

TLDR: Dopamine, the feel good chemical may not be just the feel good chemical after all, but may also be released when under stress.

The classic idea, known as the reward-prediction-error, or RPE, hypothesis, holds that bursts of dopamine in the brain link stimuli to rewards, helping reinforce associations that meet an animal’s or person’s needs.
The idea of reward prediction traces back to Pavlov's bell. He established the concept of classical conditioning, showing that dogs learned to associate environmental signals with the expectation of food. That principle was used in the 1990s to design neural networks.
The RPE hypothesis says dopamine signals allow the brain, over time, to make better estimates about where a reward is coming from – food, a mate, a safe place etc.
Now a 2025 study suggests dopamine is involved in predicting ACTIONS, which would have the effect of encouraging repeated behavior. That implies repetitive behaviors or addictive habits may not simply be consequences of RPE. In the same way, dopamine has also been observed signaling predictions about threats, aggressive stimuli, and novelty, rather than reward.

Moreover, the assumption that an animal sees a signal and later associates it with a reward, is also being challenged in that an animal experiences a reward and then looks backward in time to identify what the signal was. It seems all change for dopamine.
Science... just when you thought you had the answer, it changes!

If you've read all of this then, well done. It could well see a change to how dog training is delivered in the future ... however, when people are still talking about being alpha and pack theory, I won't hold my breath.
