Im have some interesting information on having a Dog allergy!
When we talk about dog allergies, it’s not the fur itself that people are allergic to – it’s specific proteins (allergens) that dogs produce.
🧬 Can f 1 (F1) is the most common dog allergen and is found in saliva and dander. If you’re allergic to this one, you’re likely to react to most dogs, regardless of breed.
🧬 Can f 5 (F5) is a little different. It’s a protein produced by the prostate gland of entire male dogs and is found mainly in their urine. Some people are only allergic to this protein, meaning they may react to male dogs but tolerate female dogs (and sometimes neutered males) just fine!
This is also why the term “hypoallergenic” can be misleading. No breed is truly allergy-free, and individual reactions can vary hugely depending on which proteins someone is sensitive to.
💡 If you or someone in your family has dog allergies and is considering getting a dog, allergy testing can sometimes identify exactly which dog proteins you react to and help you make a more informed decision.
As always, there are no guarantees, but understanding the science behind dog allergies can make a huge difference. 🐾
Have you ever met someone who could cuddle one dog all day but sneezes/itches around another? Let me know in the comments! 👇
