With another heatwave on its way, many of our Peterborough pups will be missing out on their usual walks again. Cue the pacing, the zoomies, the restless energy with nowhere to go! The good news? There’s plenty we can do to keep dogs mentally stimulated even when it’s too hot for a full walk. 🌞

A tired dog isn’t always a calm dog. Physical exercise builds endurance—mental exercise builds peace. 🧠🐕

Here are 5 brain games that tire your dog’s mind out in minutes, using stuff you’ve already got at home:

1. MUFFIN TIN GAME – Pop treats into a few cups of a muffin tin, cover each with a tennis ball. Your dog has to sniff out the treats and work the balls off. Simple, engaging, satisfying.

2. TOWEL ROLL – Lay a towel flat, scatter treats along it, roll it up, tie a loose knot. Nose and paws get to work unrolling to find every last crumb.

3. BOX OF PAPER – Fill a cardboard box with crumpled newspaper, hide treats inside. Let your dog forage—sniffing, shredding, searching. Natural and surprisingly calming.

4. BOTTLE PUZZLE – A few treats in an empty plastic bottle, cap screwed on tight. Watch them bat, nudge and roll it to get the treats out. (Always supervise to avoid chewing bits off.)

5. SNUFFLE MAT – Sprinkle kibble or treats into the fabric strips. A mini scavenger hunt for the nose that lowers stress.

10 minutes of brain games = roughly 1 hour of walking, energy-wise. Less chaos, more calm — perfect for these too-hot-to-walk days.

Save this for the next heatwave day! 🐾

And remember, if it’s too hot for a walk, we can still pop in for enrichment, water top-ups, and check-ins to keep your dog safe and settled.

Skye did really well at the Crufts Novice Cup qualifier (Wellingborough) this morning. We had a lovely clear round and came 8th out of over 100 dogs 🤩
We got E’d in the jumping (my fault), then came 2nd in the agility out of about 60 dogs and got a lovely trophy. It was so hot and Skye was a superstar 🤩

⚠️ HOT WEATHER DOG WARNING ⚠️ Cold water shock can happen to dogs too 🐶🌊

When dogs suddenly leap into cold lakes, rivers or the sea, especially in this hot weather, the shock can trigger:
• gasping
• panic
• muscle cramping
• breathing difficulties
• hypothermia

This is often caused by dogs charging full-speed into water after balls or sticks.

Help keep them safe:
🐾 Let them enter slowly
🐾 Allow time to acclimatise
🐾 Use a lead near water if needed
🐾 Avoid repetitive ball throwing into cold water
🐾 Watch for currents & deep water

If it happens:
➡️ Stay calm
➡️ Call them gently back to shore
➡️ Warm and dry them gradually
➡️ Contact a vet urgently if they collapse, struggle breathing, seem weak or confused

And please remember — don’t put yourself at risk entering the water. Many owners get into difficulty trying to rescue pets.

Slow entry. Cool heads. Safe dogs. ❤️
