25 REASONS TO NOT SUPPORT HORSE RACING -
1- HUNDREDS OF RACEHORSES ARE RIDDEN TO THEIR DEATHS EVERY YEAR. IN THE UK AND IRELAND ALONE AT LEAST 772 HORSES HAVE BEEN RACED TO THEIR DEATHS IN THE LAST 2 YEARS. MANY MORE HAVE DIED BETWEEN RACES.
2- RACEHORSES ARE FLAT RACED FROM 2 YEARS OLD AND JUMP RACED FROM 3 YEARS OLD. BUT THEY ARE NOT FULLY MATURE MENTALLY OR PHYSICALLY UNTIL THEY ARE AT LEAST 6 YEARS OLD. THEIR BONES NOT EVEN FULLY FUSED UNTIL THEN.
3- BREAKING IN AND TRAINING TECHNIQUES CAN CAUSE HORSES PAIN AND FEAR
4- EQUIPMENT USED ON RACEHORSES TO DOMINATE AND CONTROL THEM IS INVASIVE AND PAINFUL AND CAN CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE.
5- THE UK AND IRISH RACING INDUSTRY BREED AROUND 13,000 FOALS EVERY YEAR. MANY NEVER 'MAKE THE GRADE' AND THOUSANDS RETIRE EVERY YEAR, AROUND 7,000 JUST IN THE UK. RESULTING IN THOUSANDS OF HORSES NEEDING TO BE REHOMED ANNUALLY.
6- MOST RACEHORSES, HERD ANIMALS, ARE KEPT ALONE IN THEIR STABLE FOR 23 HOURS A DAY. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNNATURAL AND STRESSFUL FOR THEM.
7- MANY RACEHORSES LEAVE THE INDUSTRY WITH PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS DUE TO THEIR TREATMENT WHILE IN THE INDUSTRY.
8- 93% OF RACEHORSES HAVE GASTRIC ULCERS DUE TO THEIR UNNATURAL, STRESSFUL LIVES AND DIET.
9- RACEHORSES ARE WHIPPED WHEN THEY ARE EXHAUSTED AND HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO GIVE. AND EVEN WHEN THE JOCKEY BREAKS WHIP RULES THEY USUALLY JUST RECEIVE A FEW DAYS SUSPENSION AND NO FINE.
10- MANY INJURED RACEHORSES ARE STILL FORCED TO RACE. THEIR PAIN MASKED BY DRUGS.
11- RACEHORSES LEAD A COMPLETELY UNNATURAL LIFE. RARELY GIVEN THE TIME, SPACE, FREEDOM OR EQUINE COMPANY TO EXPERIENCE NORMAL EQUINE BEHAVIOURS.
12- RACECOURSES HOLD WAY MORE DANGERS THAN A PADDOCK. THE INDUSTRY ARE HAPPY TO RISK HORSES LIVES BY PUTTING THEM IN DANGER FOR MONEY AND CALLING IT 'SPORT'.
13- RACECOURSES ARE A COMPLETELY UNNATURAL ENVIRONMENT FOR HORSES. PREY ANIMALS THAT USE THEIR ACUTE SENSES TO FEEL SAFE. NOISY, BUSY, SMELLY ENVIRONMENTS ARE NO PLACE FOR HORSES.
14- IN RACING EVEN YOUNG, SUPPOSED HEALTHY HORSES ARE COLLAPSING AND DYING POST RACE.
15- DOZENS OF HORSES EVERY MONTH ARE BLEEDING FROM THE LUNGS OR LAME POST RACE. MANY MORE HAVE OTHER ISSUES LIKE BREATHING PROBLEMS AND IRREGULAR HEARTBEAT.
16- THOROUGHBREDS HAVE BEEN SELECTIVELY BRED FOR SPEED. THIS HAS LEFT THEM MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO ILLNESS AND INJURY.
17- JUST BECAUSE HORSES LOVE TO RUN, AT THEIR OWN SPEED, WHEN THEY WANT TO, WITHOUT BEING CONTROLLED BY A JOCKEY WITH INVASIVE AND PAINFUL EQUIPMENT, WITHOUT BEING WHIPPED, WITHOUT HAVING TO JUMP DANGEROUS FENCES, DOESN'T MEAN THEY LOVE TO RACE.
18- MANY RACEHORSES ARE SCARED OF THE STARTING GATES. AS PREY ANIMALS THEY FEEL TRAPPED AND VULNERABLE IN TIGHT SPACES. BUT EVEN SCARED HORSES ARE BLINDFOLDED, HAVE THEIR TAIL, MANE AND EARS PULLED AND ARE LITERALLY DRAGGED IN BY UP TO 8 HANDLERS. HORSES HAVE EVEN DIED FROM INJURIES SUSTAINED WHILE PANICKING IN THE STARTING GATES.
19- THE UK RACING INDUSTRY ALLOW PREGNANT MARES TO RACE FOR THE FIRST 120 DAYS OF GESTATION. HAPPY TO RISK TWO LIVES, NOT JUST ONE.
20- RACEHORSES ARE FED AN UNNATURAL 'HIGH ENERGY' DIET, WHICH LEAVES THEM MORE PRONE TO COLIC AND ULCERS.
21- MANY RACEHORSES NEVER HAVE THE CHANCE TO FEEL SETTLED OR FORM BONDS, NOT ONLY DENIED EQUINE COMPANY, THEY DON'T GET TO FORM CLOSE BONDS WITH HUMANS EITHER. PASSED FROM TRAINER TO TRAINER, YARD TO YARD.
22- THE RACING INDUSTRY WILL ONLY COUNT DEATHS AS RACING RELATED IF THE HORSE DIES WITHIN 48 HOURS OF A RACE. EVEN IF THE HORSE DIES AS A DIRECT RESULT OF AN INJURY SUSTAINED DURING A RACE. THEY DO ALL THEY CAN TO KEEP OFFICIAL DEATH NUMBERS DOWN.
23- THE INDUSTRY OFTEN MISLEAD THE PUBLIC ABOUT WHY EQUIPMENT IS USED ON HORSES AND WHAT A HORSES BODY LANGUAGE OR BEHAVIOUR MEANS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE WILL SAY A CLEARLY STRESSED OR SCARED HORSE IS 'EXCITED'. OR THEY WILL SAY A TONGUE TIE IS USED TO STOP A HORSE SWALLOWING THEIR TONGUE, EVEN THOUGH IT IS PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR A HORSE TO SWALLOW THEIR TONGUE.
24- HORSES ARE HERD, PREY/FLIGHT ANIMALS. WHEN ONE HORSE RUNS THEY ALL RUN. DURING A RACE EVEN INJURED HORSES WILL OFTEN STILL ATTEMPT TO CARRY ON RUNNING WITH THE GROUP. JUST LIKE HORSES WHO LOSE THEIR JOCKEY. NOT BECAUSE THEY LOVE RACING, BUT BECAUSE THE GROUP IS WHERE THEY FEEL SAFE. ALL THEIR NATURAL INSTINCT IS TELLING THEM TO STICK TOGETHER. NOTICE HOW RIDERLESS HORSES WILL USUALLY TRY TO AVOID THE JUMPS THOUGH.
25- SPORTS SHOULDN'T HAVE BODY COUNTS OF THOSE THAT NEVER CHOSE TO TAKE PART. THOUSANDS OF RACEHORSES ARE KILLED WORLDWIDE EVERY YEAR. THE HUMAN SPORT WITH THE HIGHEST DEATH COUNT IS BASE JUMPING WITH UNDER 30 DEATHS WORLDWIDE IN A YEAR.

I am a 21st century dog….
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.
I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.

I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.

Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.

I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.

You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!

If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.

I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.

So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

A reminder to all drivers : BRAKE FOR ANIMALS! 🐱🐶🚗

They don’t know the traffic rules, but you do. Whether it’s a stray pup, a curious cat, or a wandering wildlife friend, slowing down and staying alert can save a life. Drive with care — because every little pawprint matters! 🐾

-“What’s the hardest part about having a dog?” they asked, their tone casual, like it was just another question.

I glanced at the worn leash hanging by the door, my chest tightening. “Letting them go,” I said quietly.

They frowned a little, waiting for me to explain. “They come into your life like they were always meant to be there,” I said, trying to find the words. “They make everything better—simpler, brighter. And you think it’s always going to be that way. But it’s not. One day, they’re gone, and you’re left with all the space they used to fill.”

They nodded, but I wasn’t sure they understood. “It’s not the messes they made or the routines you have to let go of,” I continued. “It’s the absence. You walk into the house, and it feels... wrong. The quiet is heavier. The mornings don’t feel the same without them nudging you awake.”

“So why do it?” they asked, their voice softer this time.

I sighed, glancing down at my hands. “Because the love they give you is worth every bit of the heartache. They teach you how to love without holding back, even when you know it’s going to hurt in the end. And you keep choosing that love because you know it’s one of the best things you’ll ever feel.”
