🥶Colder weather is here and with it may come changes in your horse’s diet and drinking habits. These subtle shifts can increase the risk of colic, one of the most common and serious equine emergencies.

✅ Ensure fresh water is always available
✅ Maintain consistent feeding routines
✅ Introduce any dietary changes gradually
✅ Keep a close eye on your horse’s behaviour

Early detection is key! If your horse shows signs of colic: pawing, rolling, lack of appetite, or unusual gut sounds, contact us immediately⚠️

❄ Winter Respiratory Care for Your Horse ❄

Winter can be tough on your horse’s lungs. Dusty hay, bedding and poorly ventilated stables can trigger coughing, nasal discharge, or reduced performance.

Here’s how to help protect your horse this season:

✅ Choose low-dust hay – soak or steam to reduce particles
✅ Improve stable ventilation – fresh air helps prevent lung irritation
✅ Keep bedding clean and dry – reduces dust and ammonia build-up
✅ Monitor your horse – early signs like coughing, heavy breathing, or lethargy can indicate respiratory issues
✅ Call your vet early – timely intervention can prevent more serious problems

A few small changes can make a huge difference in your horse’s comfort and health this season 🐴

As temperatures drop, your horse’s muscles and joints may feel stiffer. Here’s how to help them stay comfortable and active:

✅Warm up properly – gentle walking and stretching before more intense work
✅Check footing – avoid icy or uneven surfaces that could cause slips or injuries
✅Support joint health – ask your vet about targeted care for your horse
✅Cool down & stretch – help muscles relax after exercise to prevent stiffness

🐴Regular, safe movement is key to keeping your horse happy and mobile this season 🐴

📞 Contact us if you notice persistent stiffness or lameness – early intervention makes all the difference.

A thick winter coat doesn’t necessarily mean your horse is at a healthy weight!

Some weight loss over winter is both normal and desirable. Clearly, excessive weight loss should be addressed but a slightly thinner horse or pony, ready for spring, is the healthy, natural state for all horses.

Check regularly:
➤ Ribs: Should be felt easily; too visible = weight loss, hard to feel = gain
➤ Neck & Withers: Sharp = thin, fat deposits = heavier
➤ Tail Head & Hindquarters: Fat loss = early sign of weight loss
➤ Behaviour & Appetite: Watch energy and eating changes
➤ Weigh-Ins: Use tape or a weigh bridge to track changes

Noticing changes or unsure? Call us for a weight check and feeding advice.

Do Horses Really Need Their Teeth Checked Every 6-12 Months? 🦷

The short answer: YES!

Without regular rasping, uneven wear can cause sharp points, pain, chewing problems and behavioural issues. Regular dental care keeps your horse comfortable, healthy and performing at their best.

✅ Tip: Most horses benefit from a dental check and rasp at least once a year; some, like young, senior, or working horses, may need more frequent attention.

Important: Dental checks should always be done by a veterinary surgeon or qualified Equine Dental Technician (EDT). Our experienced veterinary team is fully trained to perform thorough and expert dental examinations 🦷

Happy World Kindness Day!

At Rosevean, kindness is at the heart of everything we do. From the way we handle your horses and donkeys with patience and care, to the support we offer clients during difficult times, our goal is to make every interaction a positive one.

Today is a lovely reminder that kindness doesn’t have to be big to make a difference. A gentle word, a reassuring hand, or a moment of understanding can mean the world to both horses and humans.

Thank you for showing us kindness too, through your trust in our team to care for your horses, the patience you show during busy days, the smiles and thoughtful words you share with our team and the partnership we build together to keep your horses healthy and happy. Your support means so much and allows us to do what we love every day 💗

Honouring Heroes: Remembering the Courage of People and Horses This Remembrance Day

Today, on Remembrance Day, we honour the bravery and sacrifice of all those who have served and continue to serve. We remember not just the people, but also the horses whose strength, courage and loyalty carried them through unimaginable challenges.

From the battlefields to the stables, their stories remind us of the deep bond between humans and horses—a bond built on trust, care and courage.
