Meg and Beau Dog Grooming

Meg and Beau Dog Grooming I run a home based salon based in Alverton, Penzance, with the goal of providing a professional, welfare prioritised service. Prices for a clip start from £24.

I have 7+ years experience and (hopefully) have a friendly and relaxed demeanor :) Prices are dependant on hair type/condition, size, desired style, and behaviour of dog. Prices start from £14 for a bath and brush/tidy. Collection and nail clipping are also offered - just call, or message me here for all the details you need. Meg and Beau Terms and Conditions:
Please read carefully, booking with m

e means you agree to these terms and conditions. Feel free to ask any questions. I will eventually get around to printing these to sign so please don't be offended if I do ask you, I'll be asking everyone when I do.
* Beau
Beau is my dog and as I work from home, he is usually with me. He is very friendly to both people and dogs but can be very excitable. He will bark when you first arrive but while I groom, he sleeps upstairs and isn’t a bother to your dog. If you or your dog might be uncomfortable with this, please let me know at the time of booking and I can make sure he doesn’t have physical contact with you or your dog. After grooming, your dog will be free to wander the house or sit on the sofa or play with Beau while waiting to be collected. If it looks like they need to toilet, I will let them out in the front garden to do this. This may mean their feet might be damp when collected if it’s been raining. I want this to be a friendly and comfortable place for your dog to be so please let me know what they’re comfortable and not comfortable with.
* Grooming between appointments
Please groom your dogs appropriately at home between bookings so that the process is easier and less stressful for them. Matts are very uncomfortable for dogs and removing them takes a lot more time than normal clipping and can pull at the skin. I will advise on recommended grooming at home if desired.
* Flea, worming and vaccinations
Please make sure your dog/s are up to date with flea and worming treatment and that all required vaccinations are up to date. If your dog is found to have fleas or worms at the beginning of the grooming process, I will not be able to complete the groom. I work from home and flea infestations are difficult to deal with and come at an expense.
* Matts
Action taken on matts will depend on their severity. Minor matts will be either brushed out or cut out if brushing is too uncomfortable for the dog. Heavily matted dogs will need shaving short. This will be discussed beforehand but can greatly change the appearance of the dog. If done on a very short blade, this can cause irritation to the skin and is more likely to cause nicks to the skin. If a dog is matted and has aggressive behaviour, it will be extremely difficult to groom.
* Behaviour
Please inform me of any behavioural problems before booking such as aggression or anxiety. I will try my best with any behaviour problems and try to work at the dogs pace. In some circumstances I may need to muzzle a dog at times if I’m concerned it is stressed enough to bite. In extreme circumstances, it may not be possible to finish a dog due to its behaviour. If this is the case, a fee will be charged depending on how far into the groom I am. If I think it might be possible to finish another day, I will re-book them in and finish the groom. For dogs that are very difficult, I may suggest an extra charge for the next groom or may not be able to do them again as it takes a lot more time to complete dogs that are stressed and resist the grooming process. If your dog is food orientated, I am happy to offer treats throughout the groom if it improves their behaviour. Please leave me a few of their favourite treats if you think this may help.
* Pick up and drop off
Please drop off your dog at your appointment time or up to 10 minutes before it. If dropped off late, it cuts into the grooming time so it may not be such a good finish or I might be unable to finish them on that day if I have other dogs due in. I groom one dog at a time. Dogs may cross over sometimes if my schedule is out or if someone drops off early/picks up late. Unless stated that both are friendly or this is very apparent, I will keep them separate until one goes home.
* Exercise and toilet
A nice long walk for young/energetic dogs will make the grooming process easier and less stressful for them. This will also give them the opportunity to relieve themselves before the 1-2 hour long grooming process. A long walk is not suggested for elderly dogs as this will make it more difficult for them to stand while being groomed. Please just allow these dogs a chance to toilet. If your dog goes to the toilet on the green areas in the close, please make sure you clean up and dispose of the waste properly.
* Cancellations/missed appointments
Cancellations at least 24 hours before the appointment are no problem, just let me know and I’ll be happy to re-schedule. Cancellations or not showing up after this this may incur a charge on top of your next groom. If you don’t contact me at all and don’t show up, I will be unable to book your dog in in the future.
* Payment
Payments can be made at the end of appointments by cash, PayPal or bank transfer.
* Vet treatment
If your dog becomes ill during while in my care and requires immediate veterinary treatment, I will contact you to come and collect. If you (the owner) cannot be contacted, I will take the dog to the vet and seek treatment at the owners expense.
* Complaints
I will do my best to groom your dog in the style you’ve asked for whilst making sure the dog is comfortable. If you are unhappy with the groom, I will fit them in as soon as I can to rectify any areas you are not happy with. If the problem can’t be resolved with another appointment then please contact me regarding the issues and we can discuss further and I will do my best to resolve the issue.

Sorry for the non-existent posting. We've been busy lifing and gardening in this glorious sunshine!

Here are some 2x sped up snippets of Baileys groom. Bailey is generally a very good boy, but he does have an aversion to his front feet being touched, and his face being groomed. The bath scrubbing, I promise, is less vigorous without the double speed 😅 I've included a snippet of his face being groomed. There is a lot of moving while I'm doing his head, as of course, he is a good boy and doesn't want to tell me in any stronger way than to move his head, that he'd really rather I didn't have to. Unfortunately for Bailey, I sort of do have to. He has a very hairy face ( like many dogs these days), and if it isn't trimmed regularly, it will get matted and these breeds of dogs often have weepy eyes, and long hair is great at holding all of that eye fluid and creating one big solid lump of hair and dried eye grossness 🙃. Not to mention, he would start to resemble Chewbaca on a bad hair day. I've been grooming Bailey for a while now, so I feel like I know him fairly well on the table. He has never shown any intention of hurting me, or getting overwhelmed, so I trim his face and feet despite his minor objections. His tongue also likes to stick out at varying lengths, adding challenge number 2. I have yet to cut a tongue! Hopefully, I never will (it definitely happens). I hold his head still a couple of ways, he usually lets me get a few snips before pulling away. I let go when he does and rehold. It's important that I have as much control of his a dogs head as I can when doing the face, without upsetting them too much, because I'm obviously working with sharp scissors and animals that don't realise that...
Bailey always hops happily/gets a helping hand hopping into my car as I collect him, and is happy as Larry when I put him down to go home 😄

Some lovely boys and girls ☺️

In the interests of your dogs welfare and happiness being groomed, I've decided not to clip claws on dogs who strongly object. Many dogs can actually get away with not having their claws clipped. I only ever clipped our spaniels claws as puppies to introduce them, but they haven't ever needed it. We're going on two years now not even doing the dew claws and they're a great length. Some dogs do need their claws clipping, and I recognise that, which is why I saw it as a necessary part of grooming before, even when they didn't accept it. However, I have a whole groom to complete, and on a few dogs, I've noticed high anxiety around me trimming their feet that I've linked to a fear of their claws being clipped. I'm confident it affects more than the ones I'm acutely aware of. I am trying to work towards the most positive grooming experience for your gorgeous dogs that I can, as I hate to be the cause of any distress. If I trim the claws on a dog that is highly sensitive to this, they feel me touching their feet, and panic. I have weighed this up against whether it is better for me or the vet to be the bad guy here, and ultimately feel like if it is necessary for welfare for your dogs claws to be clipped, and they strongly protest, the vet is likely the better option. They can often have multiple hands available if needed, dogs generally go a lot less often so it isn't causing an issue for a lengthy time every 8 weeks or so, and these same dogs more often than not already protest to vet procedures already, and I don't know what can be done about that, but my goal for now is to improve the experience with me.
In terms of costs, I realise I offer nail clipping as part of a full groom. I don't and haven't ever added on the cost of a nail clip which is £8-£12 on top of the rest of the groom. When I already have a dog on the table, and it is okay to have its claws clipped, it takes me less than a couple of minutes generally, and is commentary, so I can't offer a discount if I can't do the claws. It is personal preference, but our vets (pets4vets) and I'm guessing others, do monthly plan for flea and worming treatment, plus other treatments, that often come with free claw clipping. Just as another option to consider, as I know the stand alone cost at the vets is often not small.
I have already tried distraction tactics, quick and confident trimming, food distraction, a hammock, and nail grinders with these dogs. Some dogs just seem to have a really strong aversion.

I am also currently looking into doing a course called Take The Grrr Out Of Grooming. Upon finding out if it covers what I'm looking for, I hope that completing it will help me further understand any behaviour challenges I might face, and best deal with them. Again, my goal is to improve the experience of all the dogs I groom. I love dogs, and I want to reduce as much fear and anxiety around being groomed as I can for those who struggle.

💥Buyer Beware - buying second hand cars.

Not dog grooming related, but as it's currently causing me problems, I wanted to remind anyone reading this to be careful when buying second hand cars, especially privately. I wouldn't want any of you to lose out. I bought a car recently from a local small dealer, so fortunately I am aware I have rights as it is now broken and could have caused a serious crash. I know very little about cars, so I trusted the dealer as he seemed honest and genuine. Whilst it is possible he made a mistake, I am now finding it a struggle to come to a fair and timely resolution with him. I have since looked more into this and realised that had I bought this car from a private seller, I would be on my own and would have to fork out for the £700ish repair myself, plus recovery from Essex. The issue is the rear axle which is heavily corroded. I couldn't see this by generally inspecting the car as it's underneath. I asked the seller if there was anything I should know etc. I was assured it was a great car...

It is great to trust people, but erm, perhaps don't be like me, and go with the assumption that they are a salesman, and not looking out for your best interests, even your safety 🙈

One of the best benefits of working from home. If I finish before collection, we can come out of the dog grooming room where it's a bit more comfortable 😄 And of course, we're all doggy people in this house!

Like Mother like Son. Otis and Wilbur weren't making for ideal photos because everytime I moved closer to get at the right angle for a picture, they'd just roll over onto their backs and would only stay still for a photo even then if my hand was rubbing their belly 😆

I kept meaning to go back and edit this differently so that it wasn't just one super sped up video of both full grooms. It hasn't happened over the last couple of weeks so figured I'd post as it is before it gets lost in my ever growing and rarely sorted camera roll 😅

Here's a groom for Safi from start to finish. She was quite long and coming off on a short blade, so it made sense to pre-clip her first (a rough clip which reduces the bathing and drying time. I like to do this because the dryer is usually the part that most commonly presents problems for dogs). Safi isn't hugely fond of being groomed, but is okay for most of it. The only thing she really wouldn't like is having her head dried, so that just got a really good towel dry, meaning it was basically dry by the time she went home anyway. This is something I do for quite a few dogs. It isn't really surprising they don't like the dryer near their head... You can see she's a happy Safi when I pop her down and she knows she's all done! 😄 This is sped up by about 10x, so I definitely wasn't moving this fast on her 🙈

Thanks Joe! I managed to get this sped up 6x to get it down to less than 2 minutes 😅 Here is the vvery good boy Pat. A star for absolutely everything. Apart from his front legs (of course 😅). Even then, he's really very good at putting up with me.

Facebook will only let.ke add one video, so hopefully I can add some smaller snippets on the comments as I have his bath video, one showing him having his head dried as he is one a not a large handful who sits there like he's just walking into a breeze, and then his happy tail when he knows he's finished and gets to bounce around on the floor 😄
