Pass wide and slow

Help us raise awareness by educating drivers on how and why we need them to pass safely.

So we share petitions and people complain about how it's written or the wording used therfore refuse to sign because it's not how they would want it worded, people want action, law changes yet people haven't signed Katie's petition because if the way it's worded. People want change but alot refuse to do awareness rides because they think it will upset drivers, or they believe rumours of others of what they say about insurance issues, or annoying drivers. We raise funds to send posters so you can all post them shops, then some moan about the way the picture is and that they don't like it so just don't put them up. We have leaflets that can be printed and handed out but no one does this because they have no time. We raise money to advertise on busses and some refuse to pay because some think it's pointless. Yes all this and the equestrian world still ask for new campaigns and more education, so guys we have all the education material you need, even videos but I see no one sharing this anymore, some say it's to long or not to the point or the video is to sad to share so again it doesn't get shared. Then Admin get told we need more campaigns and law changes, we have it all here

Just saying 😁😉

It’s heartbreaking to see riders struggling financially after road accidents involving their horses. Many people assume they are fully covered by their insurance, only to find out too late that they aren’t. This can leave them in distress, unable to afford necessary veterinary treatment for their horse or even support for themselves if they are injured.

Understanding Horse Insurance: What’s Actually Covered?

Most riders have public liability insurance, which is often included in memberships like those from the British Horse Society (BHS), the Pony Club, or other equestrian organizations. However, public liability insurance only covers third-party damage—meaning if your horse causes an accident (for example, running into a car, damaging someone’s property, or getting into another person’s field), the insurance will help pay for those damages. It covers for certain personal issues only in their policy which you need to check not for legal fees, it only covers for "death, loss of limb or sight and permanent total disablement only"

What it does not cover:

Your horse’s veterinary bills if it is injured in an accident.

Your medical bills if you are injured.

Loss of earnings if you are unable to work due to injuries.

Rehabilitation costs for you or your horse.

Legal expenses in case of disputes.

Many people assume that because they have insurance through the BHS Gold Membership, they are covered for all eventualities, but that is not the case. BHS insurance does not include vet fees for your horse or personal accident coverage.

Types of Additional Insurance You May Need

If you want full coverage, you will need to take out additional insurance policies beyond public liability, such as:

Veterinary Fee Insurance – Covers medical treatment if your horse is injured in an accident, including surgery, medication, and rehabilitation.

Personal Accident Insurance – Provides financial support if you are injured, covering medical bills, rehabilitation, and lost income if you cannot work.

Loss of Use or Mortality Insurance – If your horse is permanently injured or passes away due to an accident, this type of coverage can compensate for its loss.

Legal Expenses Insurance – Covers legal fees if you need to take action following an accident, such as seeking compensation for injuries caused by a reckless driver.

Does the BHS Pay for Full Legal Expenses?

📢 Admin Announcement – Please Read! 📢

We want to take a moment to remind everyone that Pass Wide and Slow is simply a small, independent Facebook group. We are NOT connected to the British Horse Society (BHS) and receive no funding or support from the government or any official organizations. Everything we do is managed by just four to five volunteer admins, who dedicate their own time to running this group and pushing for change.

✅ We have banners, car stickers, road signs, car magnets, posters, and leaflets available, which you can purchase and display in as many places as possible. Leaflets can even be sent to you free of charge to hand out to local driving establishments and companies in your area.

✅ We’ve had meetings with MPs, emailed the transport minister, and are constantly working behind the scenes to raise awareness.

✅ We have a petition to help get horse safety debated in Parliament. However, some members have refused to sign due to minor issues with wording or spelling. This is incredibly frustrating because what matters is getting the discussion into Parliament – not nitpicking the petition! Please, if you care about horse and rider safety, sign and share it.

✅ We do awareness rides and constantly getting let down by the bhs who do not support and have members who won't participate because of rumours, these take time organising, volunteers who give up their time, money to fill in as many forms that need filling in, contacting the relevant organisations yet still get told we are not doing them right

Despite all our efforts, we still see negativity in the group—"what's the point?" "why bother?"—which is disheartening for us as volunteers. Moderating the group takes time and effort, and we do this for free, in our spare time.

We appreciate every member who supports, shares, and takes part in what we do. If you have ideas to help further our cause, we’re always happy to hear them! But please remember, we don’t have the resources of a large organization, and we rely on the effort of a few and the support of our members to make a difference.
Admin do not get hand outs, we do not have sponsors , techalogic have given me a cameras to use to leave a reply, but they are the only ones who have supported admin in that way, we get given no hi viz from sponsers as a lot do with their own groups. We are independent and are able to be not stuck to any company
Thank you for being here and for everything you do to support Pass Wide and Slow.

Hello, everyone. I went to get my eyes tested yesterday and had a chat with the lady doing my eyes. She informed me that her husband had an incident with a horse rider on the roads quite a few years ago, and his insurance company insisted that the rider got her eyes tested.

Apparently, she was found negligent because her eyes failed the consistency that you should have for your eyesight while driving on the roads. Whether you ride, cycle, or drive on the roads, your eyes are expected to be to the same standard to be using the roads.

This is another thing that we probably should be aware of because I need glasses for driving, but I never have my glasses on when I ride the horses on the roads. Therefore, I am looking into contact lenses now. It seems there is no getting away from insurance companies trying to blame others. She was actually quite upset, and so was her partner, about what happened.

And there is no such thing as driving glasses. If your eyesight is bad, your eyesight is bad. You should have the appropriate glasses or contacts in while you are using the road.

Can I remind you all we are not a platform for the bhs, please go to their pages and website if you want to look something up with them. Thank you

📢 PASS WIDE AND SLOW – AWARENESS RIDE SEPTEMBER 2025 📢

🚜🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️🏍️🐎🚗

We’re calling on all riders, cyclists, walkers, bikers, and even mobility scooter users to join us this September for an awareness ride to help raise road safety awareness for all vulnerable road users!

This is a fantastic opportunity to come together and educate drivers on sharing the roads safely while following the Highway Code. The event is organized in a proper and legal manner, ensuring a positive and respectful message is delivered.

📌 Interested in taking part or organizing a ride in your area?
Please message Diane Ford for guidance on how to do it correctly and safely. She can provide advice on organizing a lawful and effective ride.

💡 A few important points to remember:
✅ There are no laws restricting the number of people riding, cycling, or walking together.
✅ Third-party insurance is strongly advised for anyone on the road, though it’s not a legal requirement.
✅ Safety and awareness are our top priorities—we ride to educate, not to confront.

Let’s make a difference together and help create safer roads for everyone! 🐎🚗🚜

🚗📸 Capturing Bad Driving? Here’s What to Do! 🚴‍♂️🚦

If you record your journeys—whether as a horse rider, cyclist, motorcyclist, or pedestrian—to catch dangerous or careless drivers, it’s important to report incidents through the right channels.

✅ For driving offences only (such as dangerous driving, illegal overtaking, running red lights, or mobile phone use while driving), submit your footage to your local police force’s online portal (e.g., Operation Snap or a similar initiative in your area). These services are designed specifically for handling road traffic offences captured on camera.

📞 If you experience verbal abuse, threats, or aggressive behavior, this goes beyond just a driving offence. In these cases, report the incident by calling 101. Threatening behavior and road rage incidents may be classified as public order offences, which require a different type of investigation.

🚔 Why report? Every submission helps make the roads safer for everyone. Your footage could assist in holding reckless drivers accountable and preventing future accidents.

Stay safe, stay aware, and let’s work together to make the roads a safer place for all! 💙🚦

Every death and serious injury on the road is a preventable tragedy, and yet, on average, five people die every day on the road in the UK, and 80 are seriously injured (10-year average from 2014-2023).

Now, let's put this into perspective for those who think horse riders should take a test before being allowed to ride on roads.

Horse riders have never caused a single death on the road. Yet, drivers—who do cause deaths every single day—are all required to take a test to prove they are capable of driving a dangerous vehicle.

Every single one of the 1,695 road deaths in 2023 was caused by a motor vehicle. Not one was caused by a horse rider.

Every day, five people die and 80 are seriously injured on UK roads. Not because of horses, but because of cars, lorries, vans, and motorcycles.

Drivers have tests, licenses, and road laws to follow, yet they still kill thousands of people every year.

This proves that taking a test means absolutely nothing when it comes to preventing deaths on the road. The real issue isn’t horse riders—it’s dangerous and reckless driving.

🚨 We Need Your Help – No More Silence! 🚨

Yesterday, I met with my MP, and while I’m glad he read the memory files and reached out to the transport minister, the response we got back was pathetic—dismissive and standard political talk with no real action. This is exactly why we need to push harder.

We’re fighting for change, but we can’t do it alone. When we ask you to share posts, send emails, or take action, it’s because every single voice matters. Yet, the last post Diane asked you to share was only seen by 600 members—out of how many? And how many actually acted?

So ask yourself: Why are you here? If you believe in this cause, then we need you to step up. Otherwise, we’re just spinning our

This isn't just my battle—it’s ours. Let’s make noise and demand real change.
