𝐈’𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐨𝐠𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟓 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬—𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫.

Most dog owners aren’t lazy.
They’re just doing the best they can with the information they’ve got.
And 9 times out of 10, when problems show up they trace back to one of these three things:

1. Waiting too long to start training
“I’ll book in once they’ve settled…”

By the time you do, you’re untraining what’s already been rehearsed. Early habits stick ,good or bad. Every day you wait, your dog is learning. The question is: what?

2. Rewarding the wrong behaviours !!
It’s not just about food. It’s about what you reinforce with your tone, your timing, your attention. That moment your dog jumps, pulls, or demands — and gets a reaction? That’s training too.

3. Hoping they’ll grow out of it

They won’t. They’ll grow into it. The behaviour might shift, but the pattern stays. And when a 6-month-old pup becomes a 30kg adolescent, the stakes get higher fast.

We teach this in our Puppy Foundation and PETCODE Bronze courses for a reason , because we’d rather show people how to avoid the problems than try and fix them later.

The truth is, your dog doesn’t need to be perfect.
But they do need structure.
And you need to know how to lead them through it.

September courses are booking now.
Truro and Newlyn.
Get ahead of the mistakes — and set your dog up to succeed.

DOORWAY MANNERS

THE FIRST THING WE NOTICE, THE LAST THING MOST PEOPLE TEACH

You open the door.
Your dog charges through it like a rocket.
It’s a daily problem that becomes normal, until it causes trouble.

But here’s the truth: doorway control is teachable.

It’s not about dominance. It’s about communication and consistency.

Here’s how to start:
Stop walking straight out the door.
Instead, ask your dog to pause while you open it just a few inches.
Reward calm behaviour.
Then open it a little more.
If your dog goes to rush stop, reset, and go again.
You’re not forcing the behaviour, you’re creating a new habit.

We teach this in both our Kennel Club Bronze Good Citizen and National PETCODE Bronze classes because it’s one of the most valuable real-life skills your dog can learn.

If your dog can learn to pause at a doorway, they’re already on the path to handling gates, café entrances, car boots, and busy pavements with confidence.

Our next courses start this September in Truro and Newlyn.

Want a calmer, more in-control dog without the drama?
This is where it begins.

GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG RECLASSIFIED FROM CATEGORY THREE TO CATEGORY TWO ON KENNEL CLUB BREED WATCH

On 20 June 2025, The Kennel Club and German Shepherd Dog Breed Council agreed to reclassify the German Shepherd Dog from Breed Watch Category Three to Category Two, effective 1 September.

Breed Watch serves as an 'early warning system' to identify points of concern for the health of individual breeds, and to monitor and address visible health issues effectively. The reclassification is a result of a year-long, collaborative and comprehensive review of data between The Kennel Club and the German Shepherd Dog Breed Council, reflecting a shared commitment to the breed's welfare and future.

It follows a recommendation from The Kennel Club Dog Health Group, which is made up of independent vets, dog experts, canine researchers and welfare organisations, and means that German Shepherd Dog best of breed winners, or those winning their third challenge certificate, will no longer require a veterinary health check at championship dog shows.

The health of the breed will continue to be monitored by The Kennel Club in collaboration with the breed, as part of the breed health plan. Dog show judges will also continue to submit mandatory health monitoring forms after each championship appointment.

The reclassification will be reviewed in twelve months’ time and progress of the breed with its broader action plan around judging, handling and education will be continually monitored by The Kennel Club.

Helen Kerfoot, Chief Canine Officer at The Kennel Club, commented: “This is an evolution to a broader, more comprehensive approach to address concerns relating to judging and handling of German Shepherd Dogs and to improve breed health both inside and outside of the show ring.

“The evidenced health challenges in German Shepherd Dogs, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, can’t be assessed by dog show judges and are supported by our KC/BVA canine health schemes for hip and elbow screening, with good uptake from the breed community.

“The Kennel Club and German Shepherd Dog breed representatives are committed to working together to develop a comprehensive plan to improve judges' and exhibitors' education, as well as the health of the breed in and outside of the show ring. We are also reviewing ring procedures, handling measures and guidelines and ensuring these are consistent across all breeds, to ensure responsible dog showing and welfare standards.”

The decision to reclassify the German Shepherd Dog was made by The Kennel Club Board following a recommendation from The Kennel Club Dog Health Group, which has been reviewing and discussing the health initiatives with breed representatives.

Andrew Winfrow of the German Shepherd Breed Council, and Breed Health Coordinator, Chris Hazell, commented: "The Kennel Club’s recent decision to reclassify the German Shepherd Dog’s status is the result of collaborative effort between The Kennel Club, breed experts, veterinarians, and responsible breeders. This change recognises positive advancements in the breed’s health, movement, and overall well-being. It also acknowledges the persistent work of the German Shepherd Dog Breed Council, whose members have worked tirelessly to address concerns, implement best practices, and advocate for responsible stewardship. The reclassification is seen by many as a testament to the breed’s progress and a beacon for continued improvement."

This classification means that nine breeds remain on The Kennel Club’s list of Category Three breeds: Basset Hound, Bulldog, Dogue de Bordeaux, French Bulldog, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pekingese, Pug and St Bernard. More information about Breed Watch can be found at thekennelclub.org.uk/breedwatch.

Further details have been communicated to the relevant General and Group Championship dog shows, as well as the German Shepherd Breed Council and breed clubs, and can be requested from [email protected] or [email protected].

If your dog can’t stay, your dog isn’t trained.

Sounds harsh? Good. Because “stay” isn’t about obedience for the sake of it.
It’s about safety, self-control, and real-world reliability.

When I see a dog hold a stay while the owner turns their back and walks away — that’s not a trick. That’s a dog who understands how to pause, think, and not act on impulse.

And that skill?
It transfers everywhere:

– Vet waiting rooms
– Crossing a road
– At a busy park
– When the front door swings open
– When your dog’s overexcited, and the world’s full of distractions

PETCODE Bronze. Kennel Club Good Citizen Scheme.
Both include “stay” because it’s a foundation skill. Not an optional extra.

A reliable stay teaches your dog that calm is a choice.
It builds patience. It builds trust. It builds a dog you can live with.

So if your dog can sit, shake, and spin, great.
But if they can’t stay for 30 seconds while your back’s turned — that’s where you start.

This is what we teach. This is why we do what we do.

Want a dog that listens even when you’re not looking?
You know where we are.

Recall 101: Want your dog to actually come when called? Here are 3 game-changing tips you can try:

1️⃣ High-Value Rewards: Be the “treat jackpot” when your dog comes back! Big praise, favorite treats – make coming to you the best part of their day.
2️⃣ Practice on a Long Line: Start with a long leash so your dog can roam but can’t escape practice. Build good habits before you go fully off-lead.
3️⃣ No Punishments, Ever: Never tell your dog off for coming back late. If coming to you sometimes gets them in trouble, they’ll think twice next time. Keep it positive and safe!

These are just a sneak peek of our Recall Course training methods. We dive into fun recall games and personalized coaching in the class. Ready for total recall transformation? 🐶 Grab one of the spots now!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT – ARLO THE GSD

CORNISH DOG CLUB

Arlo came through the door on a Bronze lead. Literally.

Started on our BIPDT Bronze course, tried a bit of Mantrailing, and something switched. Now he’s training full tilt in Kennel Club Working Trials — the real deal.

And here’s the thing: Arlo’s still young. Still learning. But that’s the point.

In this clip, you’ll see it. Calm at the line. Holding his focus. And then straight into a 20-yard send away with purpose and this is his very first try at putting together the pieces of this exercise. Not perfect. Not polished. But real. Honest. Progress.

This is exactly what we do inside the Cornish Dog Club.

It’s not basic obedience. It’s not about ticking boxes.
It’s for owners who want more — who want to work towards KC Working Trials, UK Dog Sports, and actually test what they’re building.

We train obedience, agility, article search — the lot.
We take foundation work seriously — and it shows when your dog can work at distance, off-lead, under pressure.

Invite-only. Sundays. Truro & Penzance.

Most dogs don’t get access to this level of training.
Most owners don’t know it exists.
But if you’re here, reading this… now you do.

Start with the right foundation: Petcode Bronze. Kennel Club Bronze. Then level up.

Say you’re ready. Then prove it.

PUPPY OWNERS. DOG OWNERS. FUTURE HANDLERS. LISTEN UP.

You’ve got 6 weeks until our September dog training courses kick off in Newlyn and Truro.

If your plan is to “just see how it goes” with your puppy don’t.
Because that’s how you end up with a dog that pulls, bolts, ignores you, and stresses you out.

Want a dog that walks well, comes back when called, and actually listens?

Then get it right from day one.

We’ve trained hundreds of dogs across Cornwall —
This is the course people come to after the free stuff fails.

And if you’re the type who plans ahead — we’ll reward you for it.

If you want your dog to walk nicely on the lead, stop yanking it.

Heelwork starts with engagement not control.

This video? It’s not “perfect” dogs. It’s puppies learning to love walking by your side because it feels good, it’s rewarding, and they understand what’s being asked.

What works?
Clear voice.
Good timing.
Consistent rewards.
Loads of praise.
And making it fun.

That’s how you build real-life lead manners. Not through correction, but connection.

Our Kennel Club Puppy Foundation Course is where this begins — with structure, not chaos. Confidence, not confusion.

Newlyn and Truro classes start Friday 6th September.
Taught by an accredited KCAI (CD)instructor.
This is what quality puppy training looks like.
