❗️Bluetongue update❗️
There have been two confirmed cases of bluetongue in Cumbria since April 2026, both cases diagnosed in stillborn calves.
Now is the time to stay vigilant, so here is a reminder of some of the symptoms to look out for. (Bluetongue: how to spot and report it - GOV.UK)
Cattle:
- Lethargy
- Crusty erosions around nostrils and muzzle
- Reddening of the skin above the hoof
- Reddening and erosions on the teats
- Milk drop
- Abortion, foetal deformities and stillbirths
Calves:
- Calves born small, weak, deformed or blind
- Death within first few days of life
- Stillbirths
Sheep:
- Ulcers or sores in the mouth and nose
- Discharge from eyes or nose and drooling from the mouth
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, head or neck
- Fever
- Lameness
- Abortion, foetal deformities and still births
- Death
Blue tongue is a notifiable disease so if you have any suspicions, you must call APHA immediately.
