☀️ KEEP YOUR CATS & DOGS SAFE IN HOT WEATHER ☀️

As temperatures rise, it's important to remember that our pets can quickly suffer from heat stress and heatstroke. Cats and dogs rely on us to help keep them safe, cool and comfortable during warm weather.

🐾 Top Tips for Keeping Pets Cool

💧 Provide Plenty of Fresh Water
Make sure your pets always have access to clean, cool water. Add extra water bowls around your home and garden, and take water with you when out walking.

🌳 Create Cool, Shaded Areas
Ensure your pets have access to shade throughout the day. Indoor pets should have cool, well-ventilated rooms away from direct sunlight.

🚶 Walk Dogs at Cooler Times
Walk early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower. Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

🔥 Beware of Hot Pavements
If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws. Hot surfaces can cause painful burns in seconds.

🧊 Help Them Stay Cool
Use cooling mats, damp towels, fans or frozen treats. Some pets enjoy paddling pools or gentle misting with cool (not icy) water.

🚗 NEVER Leave Pets in a Vehicle
Even with windows open, temperatures inside a car can become deadly within minutes. If you see an animal in distress inside a vehicle, contact the appropriate authorities immediately.

🐱 Don't Forget Cats
Cats can also suffer from heatstroke. Keep indoor cats cool, provide plenty of water, and make sure they have comfortable places to rest away from the heat.

⚠️ Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Watch out for:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Collapse or unresponsiveness

If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, and seek veterinary attention immediately.

Older pets, young animals, overweight pets, and flat-faced breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs and Persian cats are especially at risk during hot weather.

Let’s have a quick run down on our flies

1) The house fly
The house fly doesn't actually bite the horse but instead becomes just a nuisance around eyes and noses. If stabled inside fly papers and natural fly sprays will soon take care of them.

2) The black fly
In looks the black fly is similar to the house fly. But the big difference is they BITE. The females are determined feeders and often won't leave until they have consumed there own weight in the "hosts" blood.
Most affective repellent is those containing DEET.

3) The Horse fly
Let's face it when one bites us we know how sore it is....... and it's the same for our horses. If you notice lumps where they have been bitten bath the bites in an antiseptic wash or cream. The Horse fly also doesn't like the dark so if your really stuck try stabling your horse to help prevent bites.

4) The Midge
These cause irritation and other skin conditions such as sweet itch. Try to chose an oil based fly spray as they act like a barrier. Also seek products with benzoyl benzoate in.
