Today is the final day of our Conservation Ranger half-term event...and it’s also World Parrot Day! 🦜

We have one parrot living here at the Animal Zone, our Lilacine amazon parrot named Duncan!

The Lilacine parrot is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List with recent surveys estimating only 1000 to 2499 mature individuals remain within the wild as a result of habitat loss, hunting, and their demand within the illegal pet trade.

You can learn more about their conservation status and subsequent measures by visiting DataZone by BirdLife International ➑ https://orlo.uk/57g5Q

A huge thank you to everyone that has joined us this week to support us and our amazing animals – we hope that you learned something new about conservation! 😊

We love our three Luzon bleeding-heart doves here at the Animal Zone, and they are the focus of today’s conservation information! πŸ¦πŸ’˜

Whilst their global population size has not been quantified, the species is estimated to have between 5,000 to 25,000 individuals left in the wild. This puts them in near threatened status and of conservation concern as a result of habitat loss, poaching, illegal hunting, and climate change.

If you are visiting us this week, make sure to pop in our Tortoise House to say hello to our Egyptian tortoise 🐒

Despite playing a massive part within their desert ecosystem, Egyptian tortoises are classed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List with an estimated population of less than 5,000 mature individuals because of threats like the illegal pet trade and habitat loss.

There are several conservation strategies being put in place to try and help protect the species, including ecological studies of habitat use, translocation, and reintroduction!

Today we’re highlighting the conservation status of one of our more recent arrivals, the Palawan binturong.

Binturongs are listed as vulnerable, with the main threats to them being deforestation and the illegal trade in wild species as either pets or for the resale of their fur or meat.

We are delighted to have been able to welcome Malu to the Animal Zone within the past 12 months. If you are coming to visit us this week to become a Conservation Ranger, you can learn more during our keeper talk with our Binturong, as well as one of our Asian palm civets, every day at 3pm πŸ•’

Our Exotic Animal Handling event was a fantastic success! We were delighted to welcome inspiring talks from Elliot (Rodbaston Animal Zone) and Mike (Rattlesnake Canyon Ltd), who shared their knowledge and experience with attendees.

A special thank you to James from ABWAK/Hertfordshire Zoo for his support on the day, and a huge thank you to the entire Rodbaston team for their hard work in making the event such a success 🐍

Finally, thank you to everyone who joined us - we hope you had an amazing experience!

Today is World Otter Day and we have some amazing photos of our Asian short-clawed otters to go along with their conservation information as part of our May half-term event 🦦

With their conservation status threatened, recent surveys suggest that the population of otters has declined by at least 30% over the past 30 years because of habitat destruction, hunting, water pollution, and illegal pet trade.

Bubble and Squeak, our 2 otters, are very popular with guests here at the Animal Zone, and if you are coming to see us this week to become a Conservation Ranger, you can catch our keeper talk with them every day at 12pm to learn more about them πŸ•›

Today we are highlighting the conservation status of the Cotton-top tamarin, which is a cause we have supported for quite some time here at the Animal Zone.

It is estimated that there are only 2,000 of them left in the wild with the IUCN categorising them as critically endangered. Their population is projected to decline by 80% over the next 20 years as a result of illegal wildlife trade, habitat loss, human intervention, and climate change.

We have 3 Cotton-tops named after chocolate; Cacao, Coco, and Terry, and if you are coming to visit us this week to become a Conservation Ranger, you can catch our keeper talk with them every day at 1pm to find out more πŸ•

You can also learn more about their conservation status and subsequent measures by visiting a charity that we are proud to support, Proyecto T**i, who leads scientific research, community awareness, and education, to protect Colombia’s Cotton-top tamarins ➑ https://orlo.uk/2lYJj
