The Animal Health and Welfare Pathway in England has been expanded to allow farmers with multiple herds or flocks of the same species (cattle, pigs, or sheep) to receive funding for vet visits for each distinct group. This means that a claim can be made for each separate herd or flock.

Only 8.1% of eligible farm businesses in England made a claim under the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway scheme in 2024. DEFRA is currently consulting on a proposed mandatory BVD testing scheme in England from 2027 onwards. Making the most of the funding now will help pay for veterinary advice, testing and control measures required ahead of time.
