Next was Kali two days early, but we fitted her in!! She was full of herself this morning, so I took on the walking down to the field which surprised her and we are able to get some nice manners out of her. She is a young lab and fairly full on, she like to mug me and try and steal things from my waistcoat, so I am firm with her and then we sit and wait for her to compose herself and then we walk on, she is a quick learner bunt a tad cheeky!! We did some hunting and retrieving and worked on her bringing the dummy in closer to us, it’s still a work in progress but getting better.
Always a fun session.

Herbie and Hamish came back for another visit, they are growing so fast, today they came with an owner each and as the weather was cool we were able to use the pen.
So we practiced loose lead walking Herbie has had more practice and is doing so well, Hamish and Mum needed a bit more help, it’s so much muscle memory and coordination for the owner and sequencing, so slowly and patiently we get there. We practiced the sitting on the placeboard, some recall in the pen and then some together out in the big field, they were so good. It’s so important with young spaniels that as soon as they turn when you whistle you back that up with verbal praise and encouragement so they know just what you are asking of them. A good session.

Bryher came for another visit today, such a beautiful puppy, she is very strikingly marked. Today we worked on manners around other people, specifically not jumping up at me to get all the exciting things in my bag, we were able to use the pen today as it was cooler and actually got rained on!! We worked on loose lead walking and talked about when to use the harness and when collar and lead. We finished with some work on the placeboard which she is really understanding now, next session we will incorporate sit stays using the board, she is a quick learner, super little dog.

Lastly this week Teagan came over, today we worked on her ability to stop on the way to a retrieve, then being rewarded for this. We worked on directions and also knowing there was a dummy somewhere else to find at a later date. A nice long blind to follow, then a little marking practice into tall grass. And finally some placeboard work to finish of. Always keen and eager to please and great fun to teach.

Herbie and Hamish also came for another visit this week, it as a warm morning, so plenty of rests and water was in order. They took it in turns to practice on the placeboard, recall to the whistle and lead walking, which obviously puppies find hard , but consistency and practice it will happen. Lovely boys.

Willow came for a visit today, we worked on recall of lead today as she hasn’t been off lead for a while, she enjoyed her holiday with her family. We worked on getting her to stay with us when recalled and different exercises to help with this. We did some placeboard work and then some stays which are improving. Then the swallows arrived which slightly blew her mind, so we caught her up and turned it into a training opportunity.

Yesterday Tollie came for a visit, she thoroughly enjoys coming to do her Gundog stuff, finds the whole thing very exciting. The game bag that holds hidden treasures!! We started with loose lead walking, I have to remember to talk through everything before they start as it helps her concentrate on the job in hand, she was much better and achieved some good work. Then we tried the sit stay, which was not so easy, so we simplified it and then went back to it later in the session. What dogs can do at home quite often differs with what they can do in more exciting places such as the training field. So always set them up for success.

Kali came for an visit early in the day, she hasn’t been for a while, so we revisited a few things, especially her ability to leave me and go to her owner when asked, as I carry a very exciting bag with fun things in it. She is really starting to mature and be able to manage herself much better. Her doing Agility has been a great success for her. It was lovely to see them both.

This week the weather still continues to make things challenging, the two lovely pups came for a visit to the field, so we worked one at a time, I took my truck down into the shade of the tree, there was plenty of water at all times. We did some lead walking practice on a collar and lead, using different methods for each of the pups as they were different in their confidence levels and ability. We also did recall which was good, a little tweak here and there to get better results. They did so well and were great puppies.

Today Teagan came over for a training session nice and early this morning, I am lucky to live where I work so can be adaptable to this recent hot weather and do early mornings or evenings.
We started of by throwing out a dummy in the long grass then coming away from that and working on retrieving elsewhere in the field, directions, backs and some obstacles. We then returned to the original dummy. After we worked on the stop whistle to finish, this is really coming together now on the outrun. Super session.
