May's MANTRAILING DOG of the Month is Bracken.
Bracken is a versatile Flat Coated Retriever.
A kindly gentle soul who has turned his paw to several sports, as well as MANTRAILING including showing and gundog training.
He is thoughtful and considered. Although a big strong dog, his owner has built a super relationship with him and reads her dog so well.
We look forward to seeing him out and about in the month of May. 😍🀩🐾🐾

Mantrailing, Trailing, Tracking. It's great for any dog.

🐾 What’s the Difference Between Mantrailing, Tracking, and Trailing? 🐾

They are all forms of scentwork, but each uses scent in a slightly different way.

πŸ”Ή MANTRAILING

Mantrailing involves searching for a specific human scent and being rewarded by finding the person at the end of the trail.

This is a more freestyle approach. The dog works to find the direction of travel and follows the exit point the person has taken. They can ignore older scent and follow the freshest line of scent.

Dogs may use both ground scent and air scent while working.

πŸ”Ή TRACKING

Tracking is a more exact and mechanical method.

The dog is first shown an article to scent match and must then locate and follow any other items left by that person along the track. The reward is on the trail itself.

The dog is expected to work the entire footfall of the person, keeping its nose close to the ground and following ground disturbance very precisely.

πŸ”Ή TRAILING

Trailing is a mix of both mantrailing and tracking skills.

The dog is given a first item to scent match. There may or may not be a person at the end of the trail. (To avoid confusing dogs that already do mantrailing, there is often no person to find at the end of the trail.)

The reward is on the trail through finding articles rather than a final person.

The dog can follow ground disturbance but may also lift its head to check air scent movement above the ground.

✨ In simple terms β€” it is all trailing in some form. The main difference is how the dog follows scent and where the reward comes from.

Every dog works differently, and understanding these differences helps us choose the best activity for them 🐢

Which one would suit your dog best?
