A question I keep coming back to at the workbench: why does most of the dog accessory industry look the same?
Cheap hardware. Cheap materials. Seasonal prints that look dated by autumn. When everything is interchangeable, the only thing left to compete on is price. That’s a race I have no interest in being a part of.
The alternative is to refuse the formula which is ultimately true to myself throughout my life. If someone told me to go right, weirdly I’ve always gone left. No, thats not always worked in my favour but ai’ve learned from those mistakes too.
Hand spliced British wool from a named farm & mill. Pair it with hunter green buttero leather that softens and patinas with use. Finish it with solid brass that survives wet walks and salt air. Sign off every piece by hand from my Oxford studio.
The brands that endure refuse to follow the herd. Dyson didn’t build a cheaper hoover. Apple didn’t build a faster Nokia. Connolly clothed Rolls-Royces in leather nobody else could match. Savile Row hasn’t compromised the basted fitting in a century. The Mouseman of Kilburn carved a mouse into every piece, and people still hunt them down at auction a hundred years on.
Time rewards the worthy. Copying is the shortcut. Building something that lasts is the long road. I’d like to think the The Sheep Shed belongs on that road.
