Recommendations for weather apps or forecasts please? Weather looks maybe good for making haylage this weekend but how to decide!!? The crop looks lovely and will feed everyone for the winter, so it's a big decision! I know I am lucky to have these kind of problems! Any advice gratefully received!

So this feels a bit scary but I am putting it out to the universe in the hope that our next team mate is out there waiting for us. Please feel free to share and let me know of anything that might be suitable. Loving home and adventures await!

Using livestock to control bracken.
We have learnt a lot over the last fifteen years or so we have been bracken rolling. We have seen some mega successes and also sometimes less successes! Often one big limiting factor is the management of livestock and having full control of that.
We understand some people don’t want to eradicate bracken entirely but we can work really organically on each site to do what people need. Livestock is key to this. One big thing I try to encourage people to do is get some good stocking levels on in May to crush the crozier stage when the bracken starts to emerge. Cattle and horses are best for this but sheep will squish it too in the right stocking density. Some people are fearful of this for the impact on wildflowers and grass growth but if we are careful and time it right it won’t impact them heavily, and not more than being shaded and competed out by bracken would. Here on some small scale patches at home I have kept the bracken at bay using the ponies like this at this time of year. Also chain harrowing off any bracken litter in the autumn is hugely helpful for allowing other plants to recolonise. More on this later. I am building my cattle herd to send it out for conservation grazing to help with things like this too.

So....this might look like a bog standard we have finished the job type set of photos. But it is a lot more than that. We started this job at the beginning of October last year and should have finished in mid November and on to the next one. Not sure I can say where it is but let's just say we were looking forward to showing off to the zebras! A lovely little job thinning the pines in this neglected bit of woodland. We had an excellent all female team, for felling, the clients and horses and all was set for a fun six weeks. But anything that could go wrong went wrong this winter, one thing after another just battered and battered us, culminating obviously in December when we lost dear Tyler. Honestly it didn't stop even then, the world hated us this winter. We completed as many jobs as we could, a few got postponed and this one finally, 6 months late, is finished. Some of the timber was buried under the mass of regrowth that jumped up since we did the felling and we have been treated to bird song and butterflies and sunshine today. A nice flat site with loads of stacking area too. Rare gold! Wish we could have enjoyed it more and taken more photos. But hopefully it is a turn for our fortunes, time to forget about winter and on to think about bracken rolling next!! Thanks to Georgia for a couple of super ones of the ponies. Nice to see some of the oaks we gave a bit of light to bursting back into life too.

Thanks for some lovely messages but just to say, just because I am selling all this stuff does absolutely NOT mean we are quitting, far from it, we have had a long way down and a lot of things go wrong and we have twisted ourselves inside out wondering what to do but we are absolutely going onwards and upwards! For now though, here are Molly and Bluebell doing their thing!
