What's the difference?

You're hearing all these different words and it's getting you confused?

Well basically -
Mantrailing = find a man (or woman 🤣)
Tracking = follow just the scent, no man
Trailing = follow the scent, might be a man

Check out the post for the explanation.

Because what you really need is training that works for you and your dog, not sticking you to one method or training style.

There is no one sized fits all in dog training, and especially in trailing. As you have to take into account prior learning, breed traits, reward history and set up, plus much more.

Your instructor should use the skills from all the learning to set the dog and handler up for success, and to thrive as a team. It's what Trailing Academy Instructors are taught. Not just another method, but how to get the most out of the dog in front of them.

Sometimes handlers only see the top of the iceberg.

The successful trail.
The calm start line.
The confident handling.
The accurate indication.

What people notice is only a small part of the journey.

What they don’t see:
• missed trails
• frustration
• learning to trust your dog
• rebuilding confidence
• improving timing
• handling mistakes
• learning to read subtle behaviour
• asking questions
• repetition after repetition
• consistent practice

Strong trailing teams are not built through perfection. I certainly know that having made a lot of mistakes over the years.

They’re built through repetition, reflection, mistakes, education, trust, and growth.

The things nobody claps for are often the things creating the biggest progress.

So if your journey feels difficult right now, that doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It often means you’re learning.

Your dog is learning.

You are learning.

And not all progress looks perfect.

Take a step back and look how far you’ve actually come.

They did it!

The first eight Trailing K9s Instructors completed the course.

Five new instructors, and three helpers with years of trailing experience there to help me guide the newbies to success.

It's been a ride.

Ten days of theory, business support, social media skills, teaching knowledge, and most of all practical hands on teaching.

This course is designed to be more than just a certificate, it is designed to be a big leap into the world of trailing using various methods and skills.

And boy did these guys fly.

You'll learn more about these guys over the coming months.

Thank you for putting your trust in me and building the foundations of the Trailing K9s Instructors Community.

I couldn't have asked for better instructors to be part of the first course.

Can't wait for the next one 🙌

What breed do you think was the overall favourite amongst the instructors?

This was a question that got everyone thinking...

What breed is your favourite to trail? 👀

And just like that nine months of hard graft is over.

Eight teams took on the assessment, and we're happy to say two passed.

This isn't an easy course or easy assessment, it's designed to test you as a team.

There was smiles, tears, dancing, lots of sniffing and most of all fun.

A huge congratulations to our passing students
Sam and Gus
Tina and Crack

Who are now IlMa Global K9 Human ID Tracking Dog Handlers

Number two and three handlers to pass this course on the UK.

I am also excited to say me and Dee from are also IlMa Global K9 Human ID Tracking Instructors, two of thirteen in the world.

It's been a long time in the making, from our own handler course to this moment. Thank you to Ilkka Hormila for coming to assess us and teach us the skills.

This course has shaped how I teach significantly and the thought behind my goals with dogs. I am proud to teach it and support handlers.

I am so proud of the work of these handlers and their dogs. They have put their heart and soul into the course and come out the other end as a community, a group and handlers who understand their dogs further.

We'll be seeing them again soon for more tracking skills and progression as they want to keep learning.

Huge thank you so the amazing volunteers who came to lay tracks and helped us. We couldn't have done it without you!

Remember, follow the heart of the track ❤️

It's finally here, almost nine months of prep. The final weekend of our Human ID Tracking Course.

Five months of in person teaching long weekends.

Eight handler teams who have embaced the learning and new skills.

Two handlers, soon to become instructors under the IlMa Global K9 Certification for Human ID Tracking.

Wow.

What a journey it's been and now it's assessment weekend.

It's exciting, it's scary but above all it's amazing.

Watching the teams thrive and grow. A community build. Confidence build. Skills become second nature.

There isn't a course like this else where, and we're so proud to be bringing it out there for others to learn. No gate keeping.

Wish them luck, as well as myself and Dee at on their assesments this weekend, and our assessments as well.

The culmination of two years of work, doing the course ourselves as handlers and now running it guided by Ilkka Hormila to become one a very few instructors across the globe.

It's been a journey, and there's still more to come 👀 we've got plans 😉
