Sue's dog training

Sue's dog training I love helping people build great relationships with their dogs in a fun, positive and stress-free way. Do reach out to me. Which I really enjoy.

I'm a reward-based trainer offering groups classes, workshops, one-to-ones, and home visits across the Bromley and Orpington area. I went to St Nicholas Church of England School in Chislehurst and then Stratford House School in Bickley, Kent. My first job was at the Bank of England for 4 years and then Barclays de Zoete Webb for a couple of years. Then I decided to do a teaching degree at 21 years

of age at Brighton University. I taught at Wickham Common Primary School and Babington House. I did a Diplomia in Dyslexia and taught at a few schools including Leesons Primary School helping Dyslexic children. I decided to have a change and become a dog walker with my black Labrador called Jess and also a dog trainer. I have completed various online and in person courses:
Level 1 course on canine care and behaviour, Absolute Dogs: Pro Dog Trainer and Geek Course,
Holly Tett's online courses and conferences
Susan Garratt’s Handling 360 and Recallers
Animal Behaviour Level 3 - NIOQ training certificate
Nosework Instructor Part 1
Diploma in Canine Behavioural Training - 5 day residential course with Robert Alleyne - PRAMA Training. Tellington Touch 3 Day workshop
Advanced Higher Certificate in Canine Behaviour Practice and Aggression Studies. I am currently doing a Dog Breed Specific Behaviour: A Pschological Insight. In March 2025 I am doing Man Trailing Inspectors Course

I volunteer every week at Foal Farm Rescue Centre near Biggin Hill with the dog walking.

More resilience training. Bella trying out some doggy safe human food. Bananas, apples, watermelon and cucumber. She wasn’t sure about cucumber. But she like the rest. 😊

How resilient is your dog?
Bella did really well on her walk this morning. She worn a boot for most of the walk because she has a broken claw and the boot stops it getting banged about. She watched a dustman and the dustman’s lorry. And walked past some noisy builders. All with lots of encouragement and praise and some high value food. Well done Bella. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🥳

Meeting people outside the house training. It’s great to get your dog to sit, try and get them to stay in sit as long as you can. If they will sit until the person has started stroking them, that’s very good. Keep practicing to see if your dog can do it all the time someone is stroking!

Doorway training is very important with dogs. For safety reasons and good manners. Your dog can do a sit, down or stand. Ask them to wait. You go through the door first (keeping an eye on them to make sure they wait) and check all is clear. Then call your dog through. Practice on indoor doors at home first.

Sit to stand to great exercise to strengthen your dog’s back leg muscles. Belle did her physio on her walk this morning. 😊

I got a lovely review from the owner of the staffie Ronnie. It’s lovely when that happens. 😊

I met Ronnie today, a very friendly 7 month old staffie. It took him 25 minutes to calm down when I arrived!!! Lots of jumping up. Then we did some great training of lead walking, recall, leave, down and drop. Lovely dog and family. We will keep in touch via What’s App.

Dogs and humans sleep information. 😴💤

Humans sleep at night and are awake in the day. This is called binary sleep pattern.
Sleep cycles last around 90 minutes although we don’t usually regain complete consciousness between cycles.

Dogs don’t have a binary sleep pattern. In an eight hour night period they might go through 23 sleep cycles each around 21 minutes. During the 21 min sleep cycle they are actually asleep 16 minutes of that and awake for around 5 minutes.

Humans are in REM (deep sleep) for 25% of the time.

Dogs actually only engage in REM sleep for around 10 % of time. Which is why they need far more sleep than we do!

Lovely seeing Bella enjoying the paddling pool after our short walk this morning. It has taken time to get Bella used to the paddling pool. First I put high value food in an empty paddling pool and I got in too! After lots of goes of this, I introduced a small amount of water. Gradually increased the water. This year I got the pool out this morning for the first time. Put a small amount of water in. Bella got straight in. And looked very happy. Hurrah!!! 🥳
