Another life lost this week... found an injured hedgehog on one of today's walks...sadly the vets decided its leg was too badly damaged to save and it was put to sleep - possibly a strimmer injury - please please be careful if using garden tools.

Hedgehogs have a tough enough time as it is...πŸ’”

We very sadly said goodbye to our Poppy last week. I know there were a lot of people on here who met her over the years and may remember her so just wanted to let everyone know.

It was sudden, but not entirely unexpected.
I originally had a vet appointment booked for today where I had been half prepared for some difficult conversations...but unfortunately things went downhill rapidly on Thursday, so the decision was made for us, and we let her go that afternoon.

The weight and guilt of these situations never gets any easier.
Could we have done more?
Should we have done it sooner?
Our dogs give us so much - did we give them enough in return?

My little sidekick for almost 15 years.
She was everything a terrier is supposed to be - her main aim in life was to try and kill things, and my main aim was to try and stop her killing things πŸ™„

Determined and brave, right to the end. 🩷

Happy bank holiday!

Hope everyone is keeping cool.

The heat this week will mean a lot of cancellations or changes to walks but please understand this is purely for the safety and comfort of your dogs.

I don't make the decision to cancel lightly.

Where possible up to about 24/25Β°C I try to switch to earlier/later/shorter/shadier walks but above that (& sometimes below for dogs who struggle with the heat) there's no alternative but to cancel or swap to garden visits.

Thanks for understanding!

Heatwave + Bank Holiday/Half Term πŸ™Œ

If you usually have Mondays and don't need the bank holiday please let me know.

I think it's due to stay quite warm for most of next week so this might mean changes to some walks - shorter/shady/earlier/later or garden visits instead etc. I try to still get dogs out as much as possible but this might just mean a short stroll in the shade.

Puppies, elderly or brachycephalic dogs of course need extra care in hot weather too.

No real point in sharing this here as I'm sure anyone who follows this page likes animals and would never do anything so horrific.

But maybe a reminder to chat to your kids.

My son is around a similar age to this and loving his new found freedom so I know full well that parent's don't always know exactly what their children are up to when out and about with friends. But I really hope (& believe) he'd never treat an animal like this. πŸ’”

I’m absolutely disgusted to introduce one of today’s admissions, as he has been attacked by kids 😑

In the park at Greenhill Community Hub (Skelmerdale) three girls around 10-12 years old were observed throwing the hedgehog down the slide and also throwing him up in the air dropping to the floor, before deciding to bury him alive! 😠

What breaks my heart even more is that judging by his body temperature and the fact he has flystrike near his tail, it indicates to me that Hedgy was out during the day because he was feeling unwell. And instead of finding kind humans to help him, he was instead thrown around like a toy. What’s even worse is that if he was very unwell, he would not have been able to curl into a ball to defend himself. Spines also work as shock absorbers when they curl up, and without this protection who knows what damage these girls have caused.

A young boy saw some of this cruelty and told his friend as he knew his friends mum would help. They walked to the park immediately and saw the girls walking/running away as they tended to the hoggie who they could see was still breathing under the soil in a plant pot.

I’m beyond outraged, heartbroken, and disgusted by the actions of those girls. This will be a police matter; I will be filing a report tomorrow morning and I WILL push this as far as I can to find justice.

Hedgy is on some nice painkillers, being warmed up in an incubator. I’m awake every two hours for the hoglet, so I will be keeping a very close eye on him and if he seems in pain (he’s out cold right now) I will take him to the emergency vet. Otherwise I’ll try and stabilise him overnight and take him for x-rays tomorrow at the Rescue’s normal vet surgery.

I’m extremely grateful to the boys involved in getting Hedgy to safety and help πŸ’œ

PLEASE SHARE THIS POST so that hopefully any witnesses can contact me with further information. I will be contacting the Greenville Community Hub tomorrow to check for CCTV. It is not fair that an animal has been treated this way πŸ’”
