After seven and a half long arduous and stressful months, we can finally declare and confirm that we are 100% Strangles free.
Our final case was today guttural pouch swabbed and this was followed by a flush of Penicillin. The swabs were tested this afternoon and they came back NEGATIVE.

As you can imagine we are so happy and also very relieved that we are now able to open up again and get back to normal and look forward to a summer of doing what we do best.

We would like to thank every single one of our liveries who have conducted themselves and followed all precautionary measures to the letter, they have been a credit to themselves and we are very grateful to all of them.
Another huge thanks to Rob Michael at Thompson House Vets whose advice and help over the last couple of months has been invaluable and cannot thank him enough, he has been a huge help to us.

We look forward to welcoming new liveries that have been patiently waiting as well as arena hires and all the other facilities that we have to offer over the coming months.

A little celebratory glass of wine is on the cards tonight one thinks.

WELL, they say lightening doesn't strike twice, well it just has. Within the last hour we have received the news that we have 1 isolated case of STRANGLES. This horse has presented no signs at all whatsoever, but on Sunday there was what looked more like a puncture wound under its chin. We had a nasal swab done yesterday and it has been confirmed as a case of strangles. This horse has been isolated from all the other livery horses and will continue to be monitored but apart from the a small abscess that appeared he has showed no signs at all.

As you all can imagine we are completely gutted having been through the last 5 months and have been clear of any symptoms for the last three months. We have once again gone into lockdown and will monitor the situation closely and hope that this case remains isolated.

We will keep everyone updated as much as possible and can assure everyone that we have done and will continue to do everything we can to get past this once again.

Final call for our Inhand session, if you are interested please get in touch. We have three spaces available to book. There is also one space available on the flatwork group and junior polework. Look forward to seeing you all on Sunday.

In-hand work is a great way to introduce your horse to an exercise without the added pressure of having a rider on their back โ€” horses find it much easier to move through their back and core without the weight of a saddle and rider. Itโ€™s also perfect for training your horse if it canโ€™t be ridden for any reason, for example, if youโ€™re bringing your horse back to work after a break or injury. Working in hand also offers the opportunity to view your horseโ€™s way of going from the ground, offering a better view of how they move through each exercise.

In-hand exercises can be particularly useful for strength training and for developing suppleness in your horseโ€™s body, as well as for training for more specific disciplines, such as dressage and jumping.

Inhand work also improves balance, straightness, and hindquarter engagement, forming a stronger top line by strengthening back and abdominal muscles through controlled, rhythmic movement without the rider's weight.

******STRANGLES UPDATE********

It seems so long ago that we had our first outbreak of strangles here at Asmall which was about the 15th August. Since then it spread through much of the yard, with some getting worse symptoms than others. There has been half a dozen or so that did not get any symptoms at all and have stayed fit and well throughout. For most it was just a case of a temperature and the snots for a few days and that was it. For two or three others it was abscesses, which through hot clothing burst and drained out completely, looking and feeling low and off their food, but they have all made a full recovery and are now back in light work and being built up gradually.

It has been a long road but we are now six weeks clear of any symptoms whatsoever. Technically we could reopen our doors, however we feel that we have come this far another 4/5 weeks will do no harm at all just to be on the safe side, both for us and the general equine community in the area.

I would like to thank our liveries for their diligence, understanding & cooperation throughout this outbreak, you have been an absolute credit to yourselves and our yard. Especially to those liveries who after a seasons hard work were unable to attend STARS last month and understood completely the reasons why.

We look forward to reopening our doors in mid to late January for Arena hires and new liveries, in addition to Katie being able to welcome back her clients for their weekly lessons.

Thank you and a Merry Christmas & New Year to you all.

As promised last week that we would update everyone as soon as we received any more information well that day has come.

We have received a POSITIVE result for one of our horses on our yard.

Asmall House Livery Stables is on full lock down as it has been for the last week and all shows, clinics and hires will be cancelled for the foreseeable future.

We have since last week increased all bio security measures in a bid to suppress any further spread. We will keep you informed as things progress but we are dealing with this in a professional manner with the help of the fabulous vets at Brown Moss Equine Clinic.

Thank you to everyone for your messages of support and we will get through this, it just a matter of time.

Thank you again.
