Riley and Harry picking wounded Game during a Drive.

The following is copied from BASC

Dogs used for picking up must:

- Be trained, under control and responsive to your instructions.
- Deliver game readily to hand and without damage. A hard-mouthed dog (one which damages game) should not be working in the shooting field.
- Be trained to mark (note the position of) falling birds and be capable of being directed to game which they did not see fall.
- Be able to retrieve shot game quickly, or as soon as practicable, from all kinds of cover and, where necessary, from water.
- Be steady to (not chase or run-in) fur, feather, deer and livestock.
- Remain silent (not whine or bark) while waiting to retrieve.

Picking Game

Traditionally, picking-up is carried out immediately after each drive. However, when a bird is wounded it should be picked-up and humanely dispatched immediately, provided it is safe to do so.

Here we have Spaniel’s in Sunday’s Level 2 Class moving close and under control off lead.
Most of these dogs have either just started on a shoot or are working towards their first day.

A quick session between classes for Cola. Today we focused on stop to movement, stop to shot, stop to flush and cold game retrieves. Won’t be long before 12 month old Cola will be ready for Working Tests.

Here we have Finn and Charlie waiting to be released by name from the car.
We think this is an essential behaviour for all dogs.

Sunday Level 2 Spaniels with a Beating Exercise. 5 Handlers are Beating this season so we ran through ways to stop dogs pulling and have closer control. The session also included individual hunting, hunting in pairs, retrieving in thicker cover and moving to different areas close and under control.
Retrievers were in a different part of the training ground working on directional handling.

50 Handlers join us every Sunday for targeted Foundation to Field Training

We’re so grateful when clients take the time to review our training. Thank you Nicky
I was lucky enough to have found Volcuris by accident when I realised I had all the gear, but very little idea when it came to training my first gundog . My dog is of a nervous disposition and I thought that doing what he was bred to do would be a confidence booster for him. But because of his tendency to anxiety I needed to find someone who was gentle and who could make everything fun, without compromising any of the accuracy associated with the skills required. Mark always has a plan in his head for me and on every session we build on the last one. I feel we are constantly moving forward. We have attended several of Mark’s workshops and because of logistics ( I sometimes travel four hours to get to Mark’s workshops- they are really that good) I have had several one to one sessions too. On every single occasion I have felt we have made progress and I leave every session with a clear idea of what to work on for next time . One thing I especially like is that Mark does not have a “ one size fits all approach “. He always has a plan b. He works with the dog and owner in front of him. And yes, there are lots of dog trainers but there are few that have the skill to teach others how to do it. Mark has that skill in spades. His wife Debbie is fabulous and makes every effort to accommodate my complicated diary. She has brought out her own dogs for me when I needed distractions for my dog to work around.
This week I have taken my dog on three shoot days where he has behaved politely, happily , steadily and thanks to Mark’s careful preparation with cold game has retrieved everything asked of him . We have a long way to go - off lead heel work left a bit to be desired for example but I know we are on the right track. I will never be able to thank Mark and Debbie enough
