The hidden damage of badly fitting rugs ❌

Most of us are now clipping for the winter and many horses spend longer hours rugged, but an ill fitting rug can quietly cause significant tissue damage. This is something I tend to preach every year!

Basically tight or uneven rugs create constant pressure over the withers, shoulders, and hips. Over time, this can lead to bruising, fascial restriction, and reduced circulation, causing soreness and really poor tissue health.

If a rug is tight across the chest or shoulders, it can limit scapular movement and shorten stride length. Rugs that slip or twist may cause horses to alter their posture to stay balanced, leading to tension and asymmetry.

🙏 Check & Prevent. Look for rub marks, warmth, or uneven hair growth when removing your rugs. Watch how your horse moves, restricted shoulder action is definitely an early warning sign. A well fitting rug supports free movement, healthy fascia, and muscle balance and makes for a happy free moving horse!

🐎 Have a great winter but keep checking

🌟 Exciting News from the Yard! 🌟

We’re proud to announce that our much-loved resident stallion Kernow Star Remy is now enjoying a well-earned retirement from public stud duties. We may have 1 more foal from him yet but will share details when we have them, we are looking for a broodmare for Remy as we speak for him to live out his days with 💛

Remy has been the heart of our breeding program — passing on his kind temperament, athletic movement, rare champagne genes, and unmistakable presence to every one of his offspring. His legacy will continue through his stunning son, ATH Legacy Star ✨ — a 16hh Classic Champagne cob x stallion who truly lives up to his name.

We’re thrilled to share that ATH Legacy Star will be standing at stud next year (2026) to a limited number of approved mares. With his incredible colouring, bone, and temperament, he’s set to follow proudly in his sire’s footsteps.

The Legend of Red Rum 🐎🥰

He was a warrior on the track.
A conqueror of Aintree.
A name whispered in awe wherever jump racing was spoken.

But when the crowd left,
when the fences were quiet,
and the cameras were gone
Red Rum was something even greater.
He was gentle.
For a horse who soared over the fiercest fences in the world,
Red Rum had a way of lowering his head to meet the tiniest hands.
He didn’t flinch. He didn’t fuss.
He listened,as if he understood every excited whisper from every child who stood beside him.
And they came in droves.
To pat his velvet nose.
To slip him mints and apples.
To tell him he was their hero.

Because he wasn’t just a racehorse.
He was a miracle.

A horse who had once been crippled with bone disease,
galloping again thanks to saltwater therapy and the stubborn love of trainer Ginger McCain.
A horse who won the Grand National three times
and finished second in the other two.

But even with those trophies,
his greatest gift was how he gave comfort to those who didn’t care about racing at all.

He visited schools, hospitals, fundraisers.
Children who had never seen a steeplechase would light up just being near him.

They didn’t see a champion.
They saw a friend.

Red Rum never shied from the limelight—
but it was in the quiet, humble moments with children that he showed the depth of his soul.

No kicks.
No bites.
Just the deep, wise eyes of a horse
who had run through storms
and came out the other side
gentle, patient, and kind.

🌈
Not all champions wear roses or gold.
Some stand still for hours
just to let a child feel brave.

Red Rum ran into history.
But he walked into hearts
especially the smallest ones.

The legend who flew over fences…
and bowed his head to children.
That was Red Rum.

🏇 Legendary Equestrian Spotlight: Nick Skelton

Who is Nick Skelton?
Nicholas David Skelton, CBE — born 30 December 1957 in Bedworth, Warwickshire — is a British former show jumper and one of the greats of modern equestrian sport.

From a very young age, Skelton was immersed in the riding world, beginning to ride at just 18 months. Over the course of a long and storied career, he represented Great Britain in multiple international championships, collecting medals and accolades along the way.

---

Career Highlights & Achievements

Competed at seven Olympic Games, securing team gold at London 2012 and individual gold at Rio 2016 — at age 58, becoming one of Britain’s oldest Olympic gold medallists.

In 1978, riding Lastic, he set the British show jumping high jump record of 7 ft 7 in (≈ 2.32 m) — a record that still stands.

Despite a serious neck injury in 2000 that nearly ended his career, Skelton made a remarkable recovery and returned to the sport.

Rode with many top horses, including Apollo, Dollar Girl, Arko III, Carlo 273, Unique, and Big Star. With Big Star, he earned both of his Olympic gold medals — the two retired together.

His hometowns Bedworth and Alcester painted post boxes gold in his honour after the 2012 Olympics.

Appointed CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 2017 for services to equestrianism.

---

A Few Reflections

Nick Skelton’s journey is one of resilience, dedication, and passion. From humble beginnings to the very summit of his sport, he shows that persistence — even through setbacks — can lead to extraordinary success.

Officially retired since 2017, his legacy continues to inspire riders and sports fans around the world.
