Yesterday I was joined by Sophie Paw to Paw , Katie Katie's Canines Devon , Mel Claws & Paws on the Moors Dog walking & Pet care and Gina Smudgie’s Pet Services for some hoopers fun! We built value for the hoops, introduced barrels and finished by putting it into a short sequence. They all did really well!

There are still some spaces left on my Thursday evening hoopers classes in June, with the first one starting this Thursday. The link to my booking page is in the comments if you'd like to have a go. Dates for July will be published shortly.

I sent out my first newsletter yesterday, so if you've asked to be added to my mailing list and haven't received it, please check your spam folders. If you would like to be added to the mailing list for my monthly newsletter, please let me know.

⭐ Trick of the Week ⭐

This week I have been teaching my dogs how to play hide and seek!

The first step is for your dog to go to a target. This can be a small blanket or towel, a plastic lid or even a piece of paper.

Initially this can be taught by placing food on the target and fade it once they get the idea. Or it can be shaped so that initially the dog gets rewarded for any interaction with the mat and gradually raise the criteria.

Start with the target close to you and gradually increase the distance of the target and move it out of sight, in this case behind an open door.

Then start playing around with your body position. For example I wanted to say the cue facing away from the target and with my hands over my eyes. So I broke this down to sending the dog behind me to the target, and then started covering my eyes. When you make this part harder, it is best to bring the target closer so that the difficulty isn't raised too much all at once.

Finally build up duration of staying on the target so you can "find" them!

Our summer sessions at Winkleigh Wag and Walk Secure dog walking field kicked off today with our Intro to Agility class.

The dogs all did really well, working on basic jump and handler skills, tunnel fun, contact ends and 2x2 weaves.

These 1.5 hour sessions are running once a month in the Summer. The next one on 13th June has a couple of spaces remaining.

These are standalone sessions but if you'd like to attend regularly, we can start building up longer sequences as your dog learns. Link to booking in comments below.

I hope everyone is looking forward to a sunny bank holiday weekend!

Here are some of the things I do to help my dogs cope with the warmer weather:

🌞 Walk in the early morning / late evening when it's cool. I use this infographic from Oxford Animal Sanctuary to help decide if it safe to walk. 20-23 degrees I will do short walks where it is shady and near water, my dogs love splashing in the river! 24+ degrees I don't walk my dogs.
🌞 If walking on pavements, check tarmac with your hand before going out - if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog!
🌞 Every dog is different: very young, old, overweight, fluffy and brachycephalic dogs will be more at risk in the heat so adapt for your dog.
🌞 Avoid strenuous exercise, e.g. rather than throwing a ball for your dog, take regular breaks in shady spots. It's a great opportunity for your dog to practice watching the world go by!
🌞 Keep an eye on sun-worshippers. It's not just on walks where dogs can feel the heat. If your dog loves to sunbathe, keep an eye on them and bring them inside if necessary.
🌞 Create frozen treats for your pup to enjoy!
🌞 Look out for signs your dog might be too hot. I use this infographic from The Dogs Trust.

Does your dog need space?

Have you wanted to join dog training classes but don't think your dog would cope?

Is your dog...

🐾 Anxious
🐾 Reactive
🐾 Over-excited in group environments?

Our Hoopers classes at Winkleigh Wag and Walk dog field are set up with dogs that need extra space in mind.

🐾 Only one dog in the field at a time
🐾 Dogs kept in their cars between runs so they don't meet each other.
🐾 Enclosed dog field with minimal distractions

Classes that are suitable for dogs that need space are now labelled as such on our booking page. The link is in the comments below.

Any questions, please ask.

Introducing... ⭐Trick of the Week⭐

As a bit of fun, each week I'm going to video how I train a trick - this week it's a play bow!

Bow is a nice trick to train as it is a natural behaviour and a great stretch for the back and core muscles, promoting flexibility.

Option 1:
Start with your dog in a stand and slowly lower a treat between your dog's front legs. You can also use your other hand to gently support your dogs belly but don't be tempted to try and lift your dog!

In the beginning your dog might not lower themselves fully into position. In this case I would reward what they offer and gradually ask for positions closer to the final product as the dog's confidence increases.

*sensitive dogs may not be happy to have their belly touched, in which case give option 2 a try*

Option 2:
This option involves using a prop such as a chair or your leg to lure your dog under. Consider the size of your dog. If they are very small they will need something lower than a larger dog.

Again, start with your dog in a stand facing the prop and, with your hand the other side of the prop, slowly lure your dog forwards under the prop. Stop and reward as soon as they lower their front end.

If your dog doesn't lower their front end or doesn't want to go under the prop you may need to adjust the height of the prop used.

With both options, letting the dog know they have done the right behaviour is crucial, so timing of the reward is really important. When you're starting out the dog will probably only keep their rear raised for a second before going into a down.

I use a marker word such as "Yes!" or "Good!" to let the dog know the second they get into the desired position. This is then quickly followed with a treat.

Eventually you can fade out the luring and pair the behaviour with a word. To avoid my dogs confusing "bow" with "down" as they sound similar, I use "let's play!"

Let me know how you get on!

Scrumpy and Teddy worked really nicely in their first body confidence class today.

We worked on:

🐾 building confidence putting their paws on a range of stable and unstable platforms.
🐾 navigating the cavaletti poles calmly, thinking about paw placement
🐾 practicing balance on the wobble boards
🐾 having a go at an obstacle course - slow and steady is the key!

If you would like a go with your dog, I still have space available on the 28th May at 6.30pm plus have just added a class in June. Link to booking in the comments.

We managed to dodge the showers and practice hoopers in the sunshine!

Drift LOVES hoopers as it gives him a chance to stretch his legs and run. If anything, he needs to work on applying his brakes on corners!

Flicka is still learning the basics so I am working on gradually building up her independence.

If you'd like to give hoopers a go, we have introductory sessions starting in June at Winkleigh Wag and Walk dog field. Link to booking is in the comments below.
