After lacerating the front of her hock, we have very slowly managed this mares movement due to it being in such a vulnerable place for breaking down. Getting her back into work on the long lines is essential for control and safety for all involved.

We believe the long lines to be the most valuable training aid for any horse but especially those rehabilitating an injury for you can keep the control but without the rider which is essential for rehabilitation of kissing spine surgery for example!

‘Playing the long game’ 🐌

Often when horses are injured and out of work it’s very easy to rush them back, especially if they are your only horse to ride! Below is a case report showing just how important steady rehabilitation is to return to full athletic capabilities, it truly is about thinking of the bigger picture and the future ahead 💭

This 6yo mare was found one morning with a medial swelling on her right hock, no other cuts, scrapes or signs of struggle around the stable present. The only assumption is that it was self trauma. After a short period of rest and non steroidal anti-inflammatories, this lovely mare was referred to an equine hospital for further investigation.

She underwent a general anaesthetic in order to explore the area of concern thoroughly which revealed a haematoma from a haemorrhaging blood vessel situated between the tarscocrural joint and the tarsal sheath. Luckily no involvement of these synovial structures had occurred but the fibrous portion of the tarsal sheath had been torn from adjacent tissues leaving surrounding tissues unstable and the blood vessel vulnerable to haemorrhage again.

Post operatively it was very important for the joint to have support from a bandage and for her to be kept as quiet on box rest as possible. Being a young fit sport horse this came with challenges. Her rehabilitation was very slow but we were in weekly then monthly communication with her surgeon to ensure she got the correct rehab. We managed to kept her as calm as possible during box rest and then during her long 2 months of in hand walking up to 1 hour twice a day before commencing ridden exercise.

18 months after resuming her normal ridden career, she went onto qualify for the prestigious Foxhunter Final at Horse of The Year Show where she displayed a huge amount of talent especially after losing a year of her young ridden career due to injury.

Moral of the story in this case is slow and steady reaps rewards. There was nothing fancy about this rehabilitation, just time and patience which prevailed in the end ⏰

Please get in touch if you are struggling with a rehabilitation journey, we have been there and can help ☺️
