I’m so happy with how the Herdwick & Hide lambs are doing 🤩🤩
We’ve been dagging the ewes today. This removes all the dirty wool around their back ends from lambing and lush spring grass, helping to avoid fly strike - a pretty nasty maggot infestation if you don’t put in preventative measures!

Old Gnarly hedges require the occasional root lay as the condition of the wood low down
Isn’t good enough to pleach conventionally. The temptation is to lay high to keep progress up, but nothing irritates me more, it puts new growth high up ontop of old wood and doesn’t serve the purpose of resetting the hedges lifecycle!

Always consider the hedgelayer that’ll come after you, because if you do a good job, it’ll probably be you!

Did you know Herdwicks are fantastic for conservation grazing?

They are a native breed evolved to thrive in the uplands of Cumbria and can maintain body condition without needing rich grassland pasture.

This makes them ideal for:
• Species-rich meadows
• Riverbanks and floodplain grassland
• Scrub-encroached grassland
