Chinese Water Deer🫶🏻

Here’s a little fun fact for you:

“Chinese water deer are the only British deer species not to have antlers. Instead, the males have large canine teeth that can grow up to 6cm in length and are used to fight off other males that enter their territory. During the summer, they have light chestnut fur, which turns pale grey in winter.”

A little bit of progress on Gus’s portrait🤍

I am learning so much already using coloured pencils! I find lighter dogs harder as you are limited to how much you can layer your colours without making the dog too dark. I have been experimenting with my embossing and scraping tool and have found I prefer to emboss the whiskers yet use the craft knife for the highlights in the fur to work in those smaller details. I changed the paper I was working on too and this seems to have made a difference with the scraper tool!

As I’ve said this is only my second coloured pencil pet portrait, I still have so much to learn but I think this is a good start!✨
