It is with a heartfelt and heavy hand that I write to update you on a deeply distressing situation that has affected our yard.
On the night of Wednesday, 13 August, we experienced a severe thunder and lightning storm — the most intense I have ever witnessed. The storm caused widespread fear and panic among our horses, ponies, and foals. The roaring thunder and continuous flashes of lightning left the animals extremely unsettled, and the impact on the yard was devastating.
A large amount of fencing was destroyed, resulting in several horses and foals escaping their paddocks in fear. Most tragically, Maisie — our much-loved eight-year-old Cob, who had been with us for the past four years — was struck by lightning and sadly passed away. Her gentle presence, steady nature, and affectionate spirit made her a favourite among riders and staff alike. Her loss has been felt deeply by everyone here.
At 05:30 the following morning, after assessing the situation, I called in the full team to begin recovering the animals from various locations. Over the course of several challenging hours, every member of the team worked with remarkable patience and determination to safely return each horse and foal to the yard. I am incredibly proud and thankful for their extraordinary efforts under such pressure.
Although the physical damage to the yard is extensive, we are grateful that the rest of the animals are safe and beginning to recover. The journey ahead — both emotionally and practically — will not be easy, but we remain fully committed to restoring the yard and continuing to provide the highest level of care for our animals.
In light of these events, and out of respect for Maisie, we have taken the decision to cancel all riding lessons today and over the coming weekend. This will allow the animals time to rest and allow us to carry out essential repairs to fencing and infrastructure to ensure their safety going forward.
We sincerely apologise to all clients and families affected by this disruption and appreciate your understanding and patience during this difficult time.
I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our entire team. Their commitment, resilience, and compassion in the face of adversity has been truly humbling.
Lastly, I want to thank everyone who has reached out with messages of support. Your kindness means more than words can say. If you would like to assist in any way — whether through time, materials, or simply by spreading the word — we would be very grateful and welcome your help.
We will keep you updated as we move forward. In the meantime, please join us in remembering Maisie and holding all of our animals and team in your thoughts.
With sincere gratitude and warmest regards,
Pearl
