Does your dog come home more hyper after a long walk?

Ever feel like your dog is more stressed after a walk than before you left? 🐾 It’s easy to focus on the mileage, but we often forget about the quality of the experience.

If your walk is full of high-stimulus triggers without any "Rest Spot," your dog's stress levels never have a chance to drop. In this video, we break down:
1️⃣ The Human Factor: Why your mood determines the walk's success.
2️⃣ The "Rest Spot" Strategy: How to help your dog "watch a movie" and relax in public.
3️⃣ The Closing Ritual: Ending the walk so your dog actually sleeps.

Stop walking for miles and start walking for peace. Watch the full video to see how to implement these steps! 🐕✨

THE REAL PROBLEM ISN’T YOU — AND IT ISN’T YOUR PET.

When your dog pulls, growls, or can’t settle…
When your cat cries all night, scratches the furniture, or lashes out…
It’s easy to feel defeated — even guilty.

But here’s the truth that no one tells you:
Your pet isn’t being “naughty”.
They’re overwhelmed.
And you haven’t failed — you just need the right support.

As a Clinical Pet Behaviourist, I work with pets who struggle with:
🐕 Reactivity, barking, lunging
🐈 Aggression, fear, or hiding
🐕 Pulling, hyperarousal, inability to settle
🐈 Night-time crying, toileting issues, scratching
🐾 Anxiety, frustration, trauma, or big emotional feelings

These behaviours come from stress — not spite.
And with the right help, they change.

✨ What Behaviour Consultation Can Give You

✔ A calmer, more confident dog or cat
✔ Peaceful evenings and easier walks
✔ A pet who listens because they feel safe
✔ A plan that explains exactly what to do — step by step
✔ A home that feels harmonious again

You don’t have to guess.
You don’t have to struggle.
And you certainly don’t have to do this on your own.

🐾 Restore Harmony. Start Today.

BEYOND THE FRUSTRATION — Your Pet’s Behaviour CAN Change.

When you’re dealing with reactivity, aggression, pulling, anxiety, scratching, night crying, or chaos at home…
it can feel overwhelming.
But you don’t have to handle it alone.

As a clinical pet behaviourist, I help dogs and cats every day who:
🐕 struggle to walk calmly
🐈 lash out or hide from fear
🐕‍🦺 can’t settle at home
🐈 meow or cry through the night
🐕 react to dogs, people, sounds
🐈 scratch furniture or toilet in the wrong places

And here’s the truth many owners never hear:
These behaviours are not disobedience — they are communication.
And with the right support, they change.

🌿 What You & Your Pet Can Expect:

✔️ A calmer, more confident pet
✔️ Reduced reactivity & anxiety
✔️ Happier walks & peaceful nights
✔️ A stronger, safer bond between you both
✔️ A clear plan designed specifically for your pet — not guesswork

Your life with your pet can feel lighter, easier, and full of harmony again.
Let’s start that journey together.

🐾 Why Does My Cat Zoom After Pooping? The Surprising Science Behind It!

Have you ever seen your cat dash around the house right after using the litter box — like they’ve just set a world record? 🏃‍♂️💨
Many owners think it’s because cats feel shy or are trying to hide the smell, but the real reason might surprise you!

💡 It’s all about the vagus nerve.
When your cat poops, it stimulates this nerve, which runs from the brain to the colon.
This stimulation can cause a burst of excitement, a natural “high” that makes your cat feel suddenly energised and ready to zoom!

Study even found that this nerve activity can lower heart rate and blood pressure, creating a temporary feeling of relief or relaxation.
For cats, that might translate into an excited sprint around the house!

⚠️ But be careful:
If your cat cries out, strains, or seems in pain during or after defecating, it’s not just a “funny” zoomie. It could be a sign of discomfort or a medical issue like constipation, colitis, or a**l gland pain. In that case, a vet check is essential.

🌿 At HOPE Pet Behaviour, we help cat owners understand why their cats behave the way they do — turning confusion into confidence.

Whether it’s toileting issues, anxiety, or unwanted behaviours, our consultations get to the root cause so you can restore peace at home.

Finally, pets across the UK can sleep without fear.

The UK is moving closer to ending the chaos of loud fireworks - with new proposals and local restrictions aimed at protecting animals, wildlife, and vulnerable people who have long suffered through terrifying nights year after year.

For decades, pet owners have dreaded the sound of fireworks. Dogs shaking under beds, cats hiding for hours, and countless animals fleeing in panic have become heartbreaking realities each holiday season.

Now, real change is on the horizon. Several UK councils have introduced bans on loud fireworks, and lawmakers are pushing to restrict fireworks louder than a lawnmower - allowing only quieter, licensed public displays.

Animal welfare groups have praised these steps, calling them a long-overdue victory for compassion and common sense. Veterinarians and rescue workers say it could save lives and prevent trauma for countless pets.

For millions of families, it means hope. For the animals who once trembled through the night, it means safety, comfort, and love - something they’ve always deserved.

Is Your Dog's Favourite Game "Stressful"? (Yes, and here's why)

Did you know that a fun, wild game of fetch or tug-of-war releases stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol?🧪 It absolutely does!

But before you put the toys away, here's the crucial part:

Not all stress is bad!

Your dog's brain and body react differently to "positive stress" (eustress) from an exciting game compared to "negative stress" from something frightening.

Why this matters:
Positive experiences are VITAL. They create positive emotions that are essential for good well-being.

They build resilience. Dogs who have lots of positive experiences are more optimistic and can handle negative stress much better when it occurs.

The goal is balance, not elimination. A life with zero stress is impossible. The key is to fill your dog's emotional bank with so many positive moments that the negative ones have less impact.

This is the opposite of using aversive or punishment-based training, which creates chronic negative stress, anxiety, and can seriously damage the bond you share with your dog.

Understanding your dog's needs and providing the right kind of enriching, positive outlets can transform a worried, reactive dog into a confident, happy one.

Want to learn how to build a powerful, positive training and enrichment plan for your dog? Let's talk.

Ever heard that a stressful event, like a scare on a walk, leaves adrenaline coursing through your dog's body for days? Let's talk about what science really says.

It's a common belief, but it's not quite right. The truth is, the initial hormonal surge is short-lived!

Adrenaline and noradrenaline peak and return to baseline within a few minutes.

Cortisol (the "stress hormone") peaks in 15-30 minutes and is back to normal in about an hour.

So why does your dog seem "off" for hours or even days later?

It's not the hormones lingering; it's the impact on the brain. A single scary event enhances the emotional memory of that trigger and the environment where it happened. Your dog is now on high alert because their brain has learned that a specific situation is dangerous, putting them in survival mode.

This is why "letting them get over it" isn't enough. We need to change the underlying emotion. By understanding your dog's stress signals and creating new, positive experiences, we can help their brain re-learn that the world is a safe place.

If your dog is struggling with anxiety or fear, a professional consultation can give you a clear, science-based plan to help them build confidence. Let's work together to make a lasting change.

"Leave It" isn't just a party trick—it's one of the most important safety cues you can teach your dog. 🐾

As a behaviourist, I've seen it all: the dropped medication, the toxic chocolate bar, the mystery "snack" on a walk. In those heart-stopping moments, a reliable "Leave It" cue can literally be a lifesaver.

But the benefits go far beyond just safety! Teaching this cue also:

✅ Builds Impulse Control: It teaches your dog that not everything on the ground is theirs for the taking, helping them manage their excitement and make better choices.
✅ Strengthens Your Bond: Training "Leave It" is a team effort. It builds trust and reinforces your role as their safe and reliable leader. When they choose to listen to you over their own impulse, it's a huge win for your relationship!
✅ Reduces Scavenging: Say goodbye to grabbing discarded food on walks! This makes your outings more relaxing and prevents potential tummy upsets or worse.
✅ Creates a Safer Home: From dropped human food to children's toys, a solid "Leave It" helps manage countless daily situations with calm and control.

Think of "Leave It" as a superpower for your dog and peace of mind for you. It transforms a potentially reactive dog into a thoughtful one who looks to you for guidance.

Ready to master this essential skill and build a safer, more trusting relationship with your best friend? Our one-to-one training sessions provide a clear, positive, and effective plan tailored to you and your dog.

🎾 Why Teach Your Dog to “Drop It”?
Ever had to pry a sock, tissue, or mystery object out of your dog’s mouth? 😅
Teaching “Drop it” is one of the most important life skills your dog can learn — and it’s about much more than toys!
Here’s why it matters:
🧠 Safety first
From cooked bones to sharp objects, “Drop it” can prevent your dog from ingesting something dangerous — and save you an emergency vet trip.
🤝 Builds trust
When taught with rewards (not force!), “Drop it” teaches your dog that giving something up doesn’t mean losing — it means good things happen!
🎮 Encourages play and cooperation
Swapping a toy during play keeps the game going without frustration or possessiveness.
💬 Reduces guarding behaviour
If your dog tends to growl or freeze over items, “Drop it” can be a helpful part of a behavioural support plan, when introduced gently and respectfully.
At HOPE Pet Behaviour, we teach cues like “Drop it” using science-backed, reward-based methods that consider both safety and emotions
