The Gentle Journey UK

There is a bond between people and their pets that lives in the quiet moments — the soft paw beside you on difficult days, the familiar greeting at the door, the comfort of simply never being alone.

When the time comes to say goodbye, that bond deserves gentleness, dignity, and peace.

At Gentle Journey UK, we provide compassionate in-home euthanasia for pets, allowing beloved companions to pass where they feel safest: at home, surrounded by the people who love them most. No stressful car rides. No unfamiliar clinic rooms. Just calm voices, familiar blankets, and the comfort of being together.

We take the time to move at your pet’s pace, creating a peaceful farewell filled with kindness and respect. Whether your companion is curled up in their favourite spot by the window or resting in your arms, our goal is to make their final moments as calm and loving as the life you shared.

Because goodbye should feel gentle.
Because love deserves a peaceful ending.

Children and Pet Loss

Losing a beloved pet can be especially difficult for children, who often experience deep sadness, confusion, and many big emotions when saying goodbye to a cherished companion.

At Gentle Journey UK we understand how important it is to support children through pet loss with honesty, reassurance, and gentle conversations that help them feel safe and understood.

There are so many beautiful ways to help children navigate their way through grief. Creating space for children to share memories, ask questions, draw pictures, or read comforting stories can help them begin to process their grief in a healthy way.

We’ve also gathered helpful resources on our website, including guidance for supporting children through pet loss and recommended children’s books about grief and remembrance, to help families navigate this tender time together.

Frequently Asked Fridays

Will she close her eyes when she passes?

When a beloved pet passes, there can be small moments that feel unexpected or unsettling—especially if it’s your first time saying goodbye.

One thing families sometimes notice is that a pet’s eyes may remain open after they’ve passed. This is completely natural.

Closing the eyes requires gentle muscle control, and when the body relaxes at the end of life, those muscles simply rest too.

It doesn’t mean your pet was uncomfortable, stressed or worried — it’s just part of the body’s natural process for relaxation.

At Gentle Journey UK, we’re here to guide you through every step with care, compassion, and understanding, so that nothing feels confusing or frightening during such a tender moment.

Behavioural Euthanasia

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about some of the harder, less talked-about parts of loving and caring for dogs. One of those is something called behavioural euthanasia — a deeply emotional and complex decision that some owners and professionals face when a dog’s behaviour poses serious safety or welfare concerns.
This isn’t something anyone ever considers lightly. It often comes after a long journey of training, management, seeking professional help, and trying every reasonable option to give a dog a safe and happy life. For some families, despite all their love and effort, they reach a point where they have to make an incredibly difficult decision in the interest of safety and quality of life — for both the dog and the people around them.
I wanted to open up this conversation with kindness and without judgment. Behind every situation like this is a person who cares deeply, and a dog who has been loved.
If you’ve experienced this, or supported someone who has, you’re not alone — and it’s okay for this to be a complicated, emotional subject.

“I wish he would just pass in his sleep.”

I cannot tell you how often we hear families utter these words.
As you watch your beloved pet grow older or become increasingly unwell, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. The thought of more treatments, more vet visits, or putting them through another procedure can feel unbearable. Alongside that, comes the deep pain and guilt of knowing you may have to make a heartbreaking decision.

Choosing a day, telling the family, making arrangements—it can all feel too much.

So many people hope that the decision will be taken out of their hands. That their pet might simply slip away peacefully in their sleep, without pain or distress, and without leaving them the burden of that final choice to be made.

Sadly, nature isn’t always so gentle. The process of dying can often be prolonged, uncomfortable, and even frightening—exactly what we wish to protect our pets from.

A peaceful passing, however, is what we can give them.
Going to sleep peacefully, is exactly what we give them with home euthanasia. Your pet can go to sleep calmly and comfortably, in familiar surroundings, with the people who love them most. There is no stress, no fear—just a gentle, final rest.
We believe that choosing to help your pet pass peacefully, when they are struggling, is one of the kindest and most selfless decisions you can make. Taking on that pain and responsibility yourself means they don’t have to suffer. It is, truly, the greatest gift of love.

If you feel you may be approaching this stage with your pet, please know you are not alone. We are here to answer your questions, to listen, and to support you in any way we can.
We understand how heavy this time can feel—and we are here to help make it just a little more bearable.

We are here for you,

"Can you walk me through the process?"

Of course, we are very happy to walk you through everything.
We will gently talk you through the entire process before we begin, and continue to explain each step as we go, so you always know what to expect. Our aim is to make everything feel as calm, peaceful, and unhurried as possible, and we will always move at a pace that feels right for you and your pet.

Each visit is given plenty of time, so there is never any need to rush. We’ll spend a few quiet moments getting to know you and your pet, ensuring everyone feels as calm and comfortable as possible. This is usually followed by treats, allowing your pet to gradually become comfortable with us in their own surroundings.

When you’re ready, we administer a gentle sedative to help your pet relax into a deep, peaceful sleep. This is typically the most sensitive part of the process. As with any injection, there can be a brief sting. Most pets barely notice, as they are familiar with similar experiences from veterinary visits. Occasionally, a pet may react momentarily with a small squeak or a little protest, but this is usually very short-lived and quickly forgotten as they return to enjoying treats or affection. The sedative normally takes a few minutes to take effect. During this time, you’re welcome to hold them, speak to them, and say your goodbyes in whatever way feels right to you. They are welcome to continue to have treats, relax where they feel most comfortable, or even go outside to feel the sunshine on their coat one more time. Gradually, they become drowsy and drift into a deep, peaceful sleep.
While under sedation, you may notice some changes in their breathing, which can vary and is completely normal. You might also see small movements, such as a gentle tail wag or a paw twitch, as they settle into a dream-like state.

Once they are fully asleep and unaware, we proceed with the final stage, which is calm and completely painless.
We clip a small patch of fur on their leg, and place a small intravenous cannula. We then administer an anaesthetic to deepen their sleep further, followed by the final medication that allows them to pass peacefully.
We will gently check with a stethoscope to confirm that they have passed.

Afterwards, we give you as much time as you need with your pet. We can then assist with aftercare arrangements if you would like us to, or we can leave your pet in your care if you prefer to make your own arrangements.
If you would like keepsakes such as paw prints, nose prints, or a clipping of fur, we are very happy to create these with you, so you have something tangible to remember them by.

Throughout the entire process, our focus is on dignity, gentleness, and supporting you as much as your pet. Please feel free to ask anything at all—we’re here for you.

“Will my other pet look for them?”

This is a question we are asked often, and the honest answer is … sometimes, yes. However, every pet responds a little differently.
Animals are very aware of changes within their home and their family. They notice when routines shift, when a companion is missing, and they often sense the emotions of the people around them.
Sometimes, pets seem to understand that something is changing. They may become quieter, stay close to their friend, or gently comfort them in their final moments.
During a home visit, some pets may settle calmly nearby after their initial curiosity about a new visitor. At the end, they may approach their companion to sniff or quietly sit beside them before moving away to rest in a nearby safe place.
Other pets may behave very differently. They might remain playful, excited about the visitor, or seem completely unaware that anything significant has happened. This is also a normal response.
The truth is that we don’t fully understand how animals experience or interpret death. What we do see is that they tend to accept changes in a way that is often very different from how humans process loss.
Many families ask whether their other pets should be present during the visit. There is no single right answer — it is a deeply personal decision that depends on your pets, your home, and what feels most comfortable for you.
For some families, allowing other pets to be present, or to gently see and smell their companion afterwards, can provide a sense of understanding. Some owners feel it helps reduce confusion or searching behaviours later on.
For other pets, especially those who are very anxious, easily overwhelmed, or uncomfortable around new people, it may feel kinder to give them some space.
If you prefer not to have your other pets present, one gentle option is to keep the blanket or bedding your pet rested on. Allowing your other pet to smell it later can sometimes help them recognise that a change has occurred and adjust in their own time.
There is no perfect decision — only the one that feels right for your family.
Whatever you choose, please know that this decision comes from a place of love.
