2014 - Another FORGE livery throwback. Second annual Christmas outing, and the first with photos. Only a text status for the first one at the Four Bells in Woodborough in 2013. Almost every livery has since moved on but nice to look back and reminisce. Feels so long ago.

We still have a 5 day or 7 day full livery space available.

I would consider a letting the space go to somebody who wanted a lesser serviced package if I thought horse and owner would be a really good fit for our yard. I cannot offer this space on DIY livery because I need to maintain hours for my staff.

We are a quiet, well run yard, with a good routine and absolutely no yard politics.

We have clear rules, and do not make promises that we can’t fulfil. Horse welfare is important and we maintain a high standard of stable hygiene.

I always receive many recommendations on local equestrian groups, and have many current and ex-liveries who can vouch for the yard we run.

Last winter the fields on the FORGE yard had virtually no mud due to our careful management. And yet we don’t have them “standing in for months” which has been something mentioned my lots of people enquiring for livery.

Whilst I don’t have the same set up as the yard talked about in the post I shared. I am very mindful of the wet ground and refuge time out until it is drained.

We have an all weather turn out pen, the horse walker and of course the school for riding in, so we don’t have to worry about lack of movement.

One of my very early liveries came to visit us today. She left when she sold her horse. It was such a lovely surprise as her and Cika (and Cika’s mum Chloe 🌈) are missed members of “the gang”.

I’ll have to sit and work out how long ago it was that I first met her. She started as a diy livery, and later moved to a bespoke package so that we could be there to cover the “gaps” created by the demands of balancing a growing career with university demands.

Social media has kept us all in touch, for which I am grateful.

Livery yard life has been a bit of blur since August.

Liveries handed in their notice. I messaged and showed round many potential new liveries. I had a complete restructure in terms of what I offer: this was scary. New liveries arrived. In fact they just kept arriving and arriving. And then some more. My brain has been fried, mostly in a good way. I met so many people though that I started to not know if I had told them important things twice already or not at all. It was a little overstimulating.

During all of the above we spent quite a lot of time getting things ready for new arrivals. John had to fix stables that were suffering from a bit of wear and tear, plus a stable my naughty Welsh C had tried to remodel without planning permission. We were also still competing in qualifiers for LIHS 2025, RIHS 2026. We also went to HOYS, so life was already pretty busy. We have had a few quiet weekends since hoys though. Ones where we spent all morning eating toast and doing music practice.

But this weekend we were back at it. Arena hire Saturday morning. More ponies to ride back at home. And today I ran an impromptu bootcamp session for my youngest two girls and a livery. They were just planning a casual ride together but I’d seen an exercise I wanted the girls to practice and my enthusiasm ran away with me…. Then home for lunch, music, church, and batch cooking.

Also today a holiday livery went home. He is a golden oldie and needed quite a bit of special feeding - when I made feeds this afternoon my feed room felt empty without all of his extra feed bowls. He had just spent his annual autumn holiday with us avoiding the noisy fireworks.

Photo of said livery having a lie down “next to” (fence between them) Peggy the foal. George watching over the holiday maker, and Poppy was watching over Peggy until she saw me with food.

Our Story

Forge Stables is set in 13 acres of land with spectacular views of the Nottinghamshire country side. Depending on size we can accommodate up to 15. Chi Stables is a smaller set up with indoor Monarch stables, and caters for just five horses. It is a family run business and we have over forty years experience of horse ownership and have studied for BHS qualifiations. John is a registred farrier and Debbie has an BSc (Hons) in Equine Science. We both compete(d) at national level and support out daughter to do the same. We only use freelance and staff who we are happy to look after our own horses, therefore your horse will receive the very best care.

Livery options are retirement, full, part and assisted, with restrictions on numbers to ensure we can give each horse the very best care. We are a quiet, friendly yard aiming to have happy horses with happy owners. We have a yard worming programme which includes use of feacal egg counts in order to avoid unnecessary use of chemicals, coordinate shared visits for the vet, dentist, physio etc. and also run clinics onsite. You are also very welcome to book your own equine professionals (instructor, vet etc) as well. We offer all year turn out, a secure tack room, and a lit sand school. The fields can be ridden and jumped in when the weather is good and there is access to fabulous hacking including routes along the river and down the Southwell trail. We have a short grass track on site and also a lunge/turn out pen so there are lots of options to ensure your horse has plenty of exercise. Bedding, hay and haylage provided. Regular feed and supplement deliveries. The local tack and feed store can meet all other shopping needs and is just a wheelbarrow journey away. There is hard standing for trailer and lorry parking. There is a toilet onsite, tea and coffee making facilities and we are situated close to a bus route. For your horse’s confort we now have a solarium which is a fabulous tool for warming up and down pre and post exercise and also drying off after a bath.
