Too cute not to to share.

I was looking for some photos of the Forge Horsebox Hire and found this one of Lottie visiting Millside Equestrian and Country Store next door.

Due to my short term liveries (holiday, schooling, backing) going back home or their new homes, I will now have livery spaces for 2-3 permanent liveries.

All livery packages include hay, haylage, bedding (1 bale per week, can be adjusted to suit routine eg less in summer or more in winter), basic balanced feed ration.

Packages start from assisted DIY livery, with flexibility to add as much or as little help as you need. You need never worry about your horse or pony as we are on hand to help.

We are not the cheapest yard around, but with the majority of expenses lumped together you will know where you are at, no hidden extras.

We are a little slice of horsey heaven offering peace and tranquility. Any professional visiting the yard (vet, farrier, dentist, physio) will be able to tell you that we are a genuinely kind and caring bunch.

I now have space for TWO permanent liveries.

We can provide:
Full livery
Part livery (5 day full)
Assisted DIY

All packages include 1x bedding bale per week, hay or haylage, hard feed.

We don’t do this very often but this weekend we were out both days competing. We’ve had long days with 4 ponies on board both days.

I can only have days like this because I’ve got such brilliant staff on the yard who look after the liveries, our other ponies, and the clients for the lorry hire.

I often see posts on certain horsey groups moaning about staff of yards. I can 100% guarantee that I always have the loveliest of staff who are kind, dedicated and caring.

Photo of my beautiful homebred mare Forgehills Ariana (🍑 Peach) who was second in the intermediate small breeds ridden class today. A fantastic return to the ring after a really nasty kick injury last year.

I found these books in my letterbox. I think I commented on a post on Facebook but I’m afraid I can’t remember who posted, and I don’t empty my letter box very often either. Whoever they are are from, thank you so much. The girls will enjoy them.

This week so far has been all about getting those “round” native ponies exercised, and tackling the ragwort. Thankfully not too much this year. Obviously all the usual chores of turning out, mucking out stables, fetching in and picking out fee, have taken place.

The ponies are all on one feed a day. For most it is simply low calorie, molasses free Ossichaff with balancer to ensure they receive all their vitamins and minerals.

Most have moved to summer paddocks with access to more grass so they’re eating very little of the hay and haylage we offer in the stable when they come in to be fed. But a few are stabled at night due to needs or are on shorter grazing still.

Sparkles is a quirky character* so she’s only turned out in the day so I’ve kept her on a winter paddock. Trying to ragwort with her in the field, and the dogs interfering, took twice as long. How many times can a woman shout “no stop that” whilst digging up ten ragwort plants? Unfortunately nobody filmed the carry on so we’ll never know the real answer but it was quite a lot! Sparkles was determined to eat my half deaf and blind old girl. And the “puppy” was convinced it was her job to shoo off the pony. Luckily I kept them all more or less in check and next time I’m working in the field with Sparkles present I’ll shut the dogs in! Maybe I should just be grateful that they all love me enough to follow me round.

In other news I am making a gradual return to the saddle and Molly and Paris are to be relieved of a few of their pony exercising duties.

(* if anybody interested I’ll share more of her story in the comments)

A day in the life of…

🌵 Armed with the ragwort fork I took a trip round one of the fields to dig up any pesky rag, plus some docks and butter cups. I also found one of those horrible burdock plants and suffered nettle stings in order to get it out.
👨‍🏫 Taught one of my liveries.
🐎 Hacked out (yes I have started to ride again, no I’m not fixed).
🐴 Molly and I worked together on a backing livery and finally cracked solo trotting around the school and circles.
🌾Bedded down the recently disinfected foaling box with clean straw.
📄 Sorted a feed and bedding order.
🧲 Spent a log time weeding a patch of the car park and trying to find dropped nails from where there had been a bag of old horseshoes. If you see me walking up and down dragging a lead rope, there’s a magnet on the end!
📞 Took some calls about Forge Horsebox Hire .
⏱️ Fed the stables horses, filled some waters, checked all the nets, shut all the gates.

Our Story

Forge Stables is set in 13 acres of land with spectacular views of the Nottinghamshire country side. Depending on size we can accommodate up to 15. Chi Stables is a smaller set up with indoor Monarch stables, and caters for just five horses. It is a family run business and we have over forty years experience of horse ownership and have studied for BHS qualifiations. John is a registred farrier and Debbie has an BSc (Hons) in Equine Science. We both compete(d) at national level and support out daughter to do the same. We only use freelance and staff who we are happy to look after our own horses, therefore your horse will receive the very best care.

Livery options are retirement, full, part and assisted, with restrictions on numbers to ensure we can give each horse the very best care. We are a quiet, friendly yard aiming to have happy horses with happy owners. We have a yard worming programme which includes use of feacal egg counts in order to avoid unnecessary use of chemicals, coordinate shared visits for the vet, dentist, physio etc. and also run clinics onsite. You are also very welcome to book your own equine professionals (instructor, vet etc) as well. We offer all year turn out, a secure tack room, and a lit sand school. The fields can be ridden and jumped in when the weather is good and there is access to fabulous hacking including routes along the river and down the Southwell trail. We have a short grass track on site and also a lunge/turn out pen so there are lots of options to ensure your horse has plenty of exercise. Bedding, hay and haylage provided. Regular feed and supplement deliveries. The local tack and feed store can meet all other shopping needs and is just a wheelbarrow journey away. There is hard standing for trailer and lorry parking. There is a toilet onsite, tea and coffee making facilities and we are situated close to a bus route. For your horse’s confort we now have a solarium which is a fabulous tool for warming up and down pre and post exercise and also drying off after a bath.
