This week's sudden cold snap is a reminder that winter is on the way, and we won't be the only ones feeling it 🥶

Small pets, like rabbits and guinea pigs, need extra care during this time of year. Guinea pigs are happiest when the temperature is between 15-20 degrees, and rabbits originally lived in burrows which protected them from the cold, wind, and rain.

So imagine how they feel when the temperature suddenly drops? You can keep your small pets happy and healthy during the winter by following our tips ❄️

Remember hedgehogs this bonfire night…

Bonfire night can be a magical time - but for hedgehogs and other wildlife, it can be deadly.

As you prepare for Guy Fawkes Night, please take a moment to consider our spiky friends.

Piles of logs and leaves look like the perfect hibernation spot to a hedgehog, and they often crawl inside - only to be tragically caught in a fire.

Here’s how you can help protect hedgehogs this November 5th:

✅ Build your bonfire on the day of lighting to stop wildlife moving in.
✅ Move your bonfire a few metres before lighting to give hiding animals a chance to escape.
✅ Thoroughly check your bonfire for wildlife before lighting – even if you’ve followed the other steps.
✅ Put up a barrier around your bonfire in advance to deter hedgehogs.
✅ Use the hashtag to raise awareness.

If you find a hedgehog:
📦 Place it in a high-sided box with a towel, water, and some meaty cat or dog food.
🏡 Keep it in a quiet shed or garage until the fire is out and it’s safe to release.
📞 If the hedgehog is injured, call the British Hedgehog Preservation Society: 01584 890801.

Let’s make this bonfire night safer for wildlife.

Every small action helps protect the precious creatures we share our world with.

⚠️ Watch Out for Deer ⚠️
As evenings get darker, deer become harder to see and are often more active near roads. Each year, thousands of deer are involved in vehicle collisions across the UK.

🚗 Slow down in high-risk areas
🌅 Take extra care at dawn and dusk
💡 Use full beams when safe, but dip them if you see a deer
🛑 Don’t swerve suddenly, brake firmly and stay in control

By staying alert, you can help protect yourself and wildlife.

Did you know...?
have evolved without a 'fight or flight' instinct...?
That means that in the face of danger - such as a strimmer, or fire creeping through a bonfire heap - their instinct is to roll into a tight ball instead of run for safety.
🍂 🦔 🔥

Look out for the little guys this autumn - always check for wildlife.

🎆🎇 Top tips to keep animals safe in season 🎆🎇

💬 Talk to your vet to discuss treatment options for fireworks-induced stress. This may include drugs to help dogs with noise phobias or pheromone products to apply next to your pets’ den and around the house to keep them calm.

🧸 Create a well-padded den for your pet to access ahead of fireworks season so they have a safe place to hide when fireworks start.

🧑‍💻 Ensure your pet is microchipped and your details are up to date on the database, in case it runs away from home.

🏠 Move small pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs to a quiet place indoors.

🪟 Close windows and curtains and provide background noise to help mask the fireworks.

🙂 If your pet is distressed, remain calm yourself. Restlessness or toileting in the house can be signs of stress, so don’t punish them.

🐄 Keep livestock housed at times when fireworks are likely to be set off locally and remove any firework debris from grazing pasture before letting them out.

🐴 Horses may be better turned out in a field than stabled, as in a stable they may feel enclosed and unable to move. Owners should consult a qualified equine behaviourist if they have significant concerns about their horse’s response to fireworks.

🎇 If you’re hosting a fireworks display, avoid setting them off near horses, livestock or companion animals. Dispose of any debris and remnants of fireworks responsibly.

🔥 Before lighting a bonfire, remember to check for any wild animals that may be hiding in it.

Temperatures are set to reach the low to mid thirties on Tuesday - a little reminder that if you’ve got a furry friend not to walk them during the middle of the day.

Especially when the tarmac can be some 25 degrees higher than the air temperature. Here’s a handy test to work out if it’s too hot for your pup.

Best time of day is early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun has little strength.

Ensure they’ve got fresh water readily available.

Share with your friends to spread the word and raise awareness and enjoy the summer sunshine if you can ☺️🐶
