🥳 A big well done to my Hethersett group on Monday evening for completing the 🩷Puppy School🩷 course

Such a fun group and I feel like they've all grown up so much, especially Ziggy who did Pre-School at Rackheath Vets before the course and was so shy, the difference in him is astounding 🤩

Hoveton's best sniffers!

At the fete yesterday I met lots f lovely dogs who came over to take part in some easy nose games. Some of the dogs here had never done anything like this before, some confident, some nervous of the environment or objects, and some experienced. Nose games can be adapted to any dog!

Arousal and loose lead walking 🐕🚶‍♀️

🧠 Arousal is essentially a readiness for action. When dogs are in a state of arousal (which can be influenced by emotions such as excitement, frustration, anxiety) they have a build up of energy that needs to be released.

🐕 An increase in arousal often results in dogs doing things that are intrinsically reinforcing. In other words, things that naturally feel good for the dog, without any input from us. For most dogs this involves movement. Think about what your dogs breed / mix of breeds was originally bred for. Your spaniel might start hunting, your terrier might start chasing, or digging, or barking, your collie might start herding things, your lab might start mouthing. These are intrinsically reinforcing behaviours - they feel good for the dog to do them.

🚶‍♀️When we ask a dog to walk on a loose lead, we are actually asking the dog to have quite a significant amount of impulse control. The problem is as arousal goes up ⬆️ impulse control goes down ⬇️

🎓 It's not that we can't teach a dog to walk on a loose lead, but we need to consider the impact of arousal on our dogs capacity to be able to do so. The first walk of the day, anticipation of where you are going, seeing other dogs, alllll the sniffs out on walks....these are all arousal increasing things. And arousal = increased movement.

❤️ We need to give our dogs a break sometimes. They are trying their best. It is our job to meet them where they are and help them to be successful. Rather than punishing them for being dogs.

She's gone home as it's a long and busy day, and it's too warm for her 🫠
