In conclusion, this study shows that the risk of cranial cruciate ligament disease in dogs is linked to how long they are exposed to natural s*x hormones, and the relationship isn’t simple or linear. The highest risk was seen when females were spayed before about 1054 days (just under 3 years) and males before about 805 days (a little over 2 years). These results may help define what counts as “early” spay or neuter when it comes to cranial cruciate ligament disease risk.

Veterinary reproduction specialists now recommend hormone-preserving sterilization: preventing unwanted litters & less risk of torn cruciates.

I know it is inconvenient, but this is why I cancel grooming appointments in the middle of the day during hot weather. The sun is on the front of the barn all morning, glass and wood construction with no insulation. As the sun goes over the roof it starts to cool as it is on the red brick back wall. The weather forecast may indicate it is cooler earlier in the day, but after 19 years in this building, I know what happens. ( And if course in the winter it's colder in the afternoon when the sun is at the back) The joys of a barn built in the 1800's

Here’s an easy to make homemade ear cleaner recipe to get you started:

Your pet’s L-shaped ear ca**ls make it hard for debris to exit—and easy for bacteria and fungi to grow, especially if the ears are moist—but this cleaner can help. Please don’t use any narrow pointy tools to clean the inner ear, however, as they can rupture the eardrum. Also be aware that scratching, rubbing, redness, tilting the head in one direction, discharge, or odor can be signs of inflammation or a serious infection. Take your pet to the veterinarian if you notice any of these behaviors.

Ingredients:

1⁄3 cup witch hazel
3 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar🍏
1 tablespoon colloidal silver💧

(Note: blending of acetic acid (vinegar) with hydrogen peroxide creates a small amount of peracetic acid – a compound known for its powerful antimicrobial properties but MUST be diluted. That’s why this formula includes witch hazel, to ensure proper dilution for safe topical use.

Directions:

1. Thoroughly mix ingredients in a bowl.🥣
2. Pour over cotton rounds in a clean, dry container with a tight lid. Allow the liquid to fully saturate all the rounds.
3. Use as many rounds as needed to clean ears.
4. Use a dry cotton round when done to dry ear ca**l.
5. Store in a cool, dry place and make a fresh batch every week.🫙

⚠ Beware of microchip scams ⚠

Microchipping your pet is an essential step in keeping them safe, but did you know that not all microchip registration services are legitimate?

We recently had a case where a client rehomed a pet and paid to transfer the microchip details to their name through a website called 'Petchip Network'. A year later, they discovered that the transfer had never actually taken place, and the previous owner was still registered on the microchip. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident.

Here are a couple of articles that highlight the growing concern:
🔗 https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/pet-owners-risk-500-fine-for-using-unaccredited-microchip-company-petchip-acr4g4g1KNd8

We’ve also received reports that 'Petchip Network' have been emailing pet owners, claiming their pets' microchip has expired and asking for payment to update it.

To ensure your pet’s safety, always make sure microchip registrations and transfers are handled through DEFRA-approved databases. Trusted databases include Animal Tracker, Petlog, Identibase, and SmartTrace. If you’re ever in doubt, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for guidance.

You can also check if your pet’s microchip is correctly registered by entering the microchip number at www.check-a-chip.co.uk. Remember, a microchip is only useful if it holds the correct owner information!

Stay vigilant and keep you and your pet safe! 🐾
