Pond liners or concrete ponds – what’s best in the UK?
The honest answer: it depends on your pond goals, budget, and how long you want it to last. Both have their place in the UK climate.
Pond Liners – Best for most UK garden ponds
Pros: ✅ Usually cheaper to install
✅ Faster to build
✅ Flexible shapes and sizes – great for wildlife or natural-looking ponds
✅ Easier to repair if damaged
✅ Better for DIY projects
Cons: ❌ Can puncture (roots, pets, sharp stones)
❌ May need replacing eventually (though good EPDM rubber liner can last years)
❌ Can wrinkle if not installed well
Best for: Wildlife ponds, standard garden ponds, most hobby keepers.
Concrete Ponds – Best for permanent, premium builds
Pros: ✅ Extremely strong and long-lasting
✅ Ideal for large or formal Koi ponds
✅ No puncture worries
✅ Great for raised ponds/windows/features
Cons: ❌ More expensive
❌ Longer build time
❌ Can crack if ground shifts or poor foundations
❌ Harder to change later
Best for: Serious koi keepers, raised ponds, formal designs, “forever” ponds.
What works best in the UK?
For most people: quality liner wins 🇬🇧
Why? Our weather swings (frost, rain, heat) and shifting soils can be kinder to
a flexible liner than rigid concrete.
For high-end koi setups or raised ponds: concrete often wins.
My rule:
Want natural and affordable? → Liner
Want formal and permanent? → Concrete
