Your pet has been referred for heart investigations.. what happens next?
We know this can feel like a worrying time, so we wanted to share a simple overview of what to expect when your pet comes to see Rosie, our cardiologist.
BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT:
You’ll be asked to complete a short questionnaire about their health. For cats, we may recommend an anti‑anxiety medication the night before and shortly before the visit to help keep them relaxed and comfortable.
ON THE DAY:
They will be admitted for the day by one of our nurses or care assistants. Rosie will carry out an examination and usually check their blood pressure. Sometimes, blood tests are needed – this just involves clipping a small patch of fur first.
If a heart scan (echocardiogram) is required:
- A small amount of fur is clipped from the chest
- Ultrasound gel is applied
- They are held by one of our nurses, who offers lots of reassurance, cuddles and kind words – some pets even fall asleep! 💤
The scan is non‑invasive and pain‑free. We usually avoid sedation as it can affect how the heart works, but this will always be discussed with you if it’s needed.
If an ECG is performed (to check heart rhythm), small sticky pads are placed on your pet’s paws. This is also painless and non‑invasive.
AFTER:
Once all tests are complete, Rosie will call you to explain the findings, discuss any treatment needed, and talk through next steps or follow‑up appointments.
