Keep your dogs cool!
I have no doubt that with the rising temperatures this week groomers across the country will be inundated with calls from people wanting to book their dogs in to be clipped. But is it really necessary?
Letโs take a quick look at how a dogs fur works with regards to thermoregulation.
Like humans, dogs have hair follicles which stem right from the dermis layer of their skin. This means they are perfectly positioned amongst the blood vessels which help to regulate a dogs body temperature.
In cold weather, the follicles contract which causes the hair shaft to stand upright therefore trapping air between the skin and fur and providing insulation. In warmer weather, the follicles relax which allows air to flow through therefore releasing excess heat.
So what relevance does this have to grooming? A groomers job is to ensure that a dogs coat and skin are functioning correctly. In order for the follicles to contract and relax, the skin and fur need to be in a healthy condition, and free of any matting or compacted hair. Matts prevent the hair strands from being able to move as instructed by the follicles and compacted hair prevents hair from being able to flow through.
Although shaving a dogs fur can appear to make them cooler, alot of the time it can just make it easier to manage. And donโt forget that double coated breeds such as retrievers, huskyโs etc should absolutely NOT be shaved.
So in simple terms, what Iโm trying to say is please donโt panic if you canโt get an appointment (your groomers are trying their best to accommodate!). Just make sure you spend a good amount of time each day BRUSHING your dogs, removing any dead undercoat, thus allowing the skin to do the job it was designed to do. Though please be aware that just like us, dogs can get grumpy if theyโre hot and bothered so little and often is key rather than forcing them through a long brushing session in the sun.
Keep your dogs in the shade with access to plenty of cool water and for Dogs Sake DONโT WALK YOUR DOGS IN THE HEAT!
