Here at Every Paw Counts we believe it is very important that all dog walkers are respectful, understanding, responsible and well mannered when enjoying their walks with their furry friends in public spaces.
This goes for dogs being walked both on and off lead.
This sign correctly highlights that if a dog is off lead and friendly, it shouldn't be allowed to approach others sharing the same space with dogs on lead to avoid upset.
For example a very friendly cockapoo running up to a westie that's on lead could be very intimidated and regardless if the westie is friendly or nervous this might be too much for them to handle and they could react negatively or the westie may have been attacked in the past.
When a dog is off lead , good recall should always be expected and be able to be achieved π.
However, this sign could go further with dog owner's responsibility.
For example, If you are walking a dog and wish to be left alone a Parks at busy times may not be a wise choice.
when walking a dog on lead in a public area, there is a possibility that a dog of lead might approach .
For example a younger dog recently completing training is more likely to have a forgetful moment, or a dog that couldn't hear the owner recall due to background noise, or simply another dog was on lead but slipped its collar or the lead broke and it got awake from its owner.
So if your dog is aggressive or very nervous and this possible encounter would cause great distress, then it would be wise to ensure you have appropriately assessed the environment and possible risks before walking your dog in that location. ππΆ
It is also important to assess the risk your own dog might cause to others if it was to also slip its lead or escape from your control in a public space .
This is why we always recommend all dog walkers to be understanding, responsible, respectful, polite and be very mindful about their needs and the needs of others when out walking their dogs in public.ππΆ
Remember everyone is just trying to enjoy their time with their furry family members that best way they can. Have a great walk everyone ππΆπΎ.
