Just a little friendly reminder from to remind your pawrents to brush all the teefses ๐Ÿ˜.

Brushing your dog's teeth can seem like a daunting task and most dogs will often run away at the sight of a toothbrush. Not Herbie. He clearly loves his toothbrush ๐Ÿ˜. It is important to start teeth brushing training properly to avoid your dog building a negative association with it.

โŒ๏ธ Don't force the toothbrush in your dog's mouth

โŒ๏ธ Don't use paste straight away

โŒ๏ธ Don't hold your dog still while trying to brush their teeth - if they feel trapped, they will panic

โœ”๏ธ Use clear and consistent words such as 'Brush teeth' or simply use the word 'teeth' before reaching forward to brush their teeth

โœ”๏ธ Ensure your dog is comfortable sitting still while you handle their mouth

โœ”๏ธ Give your dog space when they ask for it

๐Ÿพ Blossom ๐Ÿพ *Before & After*

This is Blossom. She would bark, jump, run around and was generslly unable to settle in the sitting room. Because of this behaviour, her owner would resort to not spending much time in the sitting room or she would need to keep Blossom in the kitchen.

After weeks of training, Blossom looks much happier and comfortable being in the sitting room and will curl up and settle.

Well done, Blossom and her pawrent! ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿพ HERBIE & SHEEP ๐Ÿพ

I have listed the main body languages in both videos in this post but you can generally see how much happier and calmer Herbie is walking through the sheep fields! He sniffs more, he doesn't feel the need to charge at the sheep and he checks in with his owner so much more than before.

This is a result of consistent and persistent training and trusting the process. Training doesn't always look like you are activley doing something every second of the day. It is the small things that help build the biggest confidence.

Well done Herb & Mum! ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿพ Herbie's journey ๐Ÿพ

Behavioural issues:

โ–ช๏ธŽ General lack of confidence leading to reactive behaviours towards other dogs/unknown objects/noises when inside the house/pulling on the lead and very high stress when being examined at the vets.

What we did to help:

โ–ช๏ธŽ Basic lead walking training
โ–ช๏ธŽ Confidence building exercises along with calming ones
โ–ช๏ธŽ Allowing Herbie to make his own choices where applicable and rewarding him for making the right choice
โ–ช๏ธŽ Desensitisation and counter conditioning to triggers
โ–ช๏ธŽ Learning how to stop playtime getting out of control with their other dog
โ–ช๏ธŽ Confidence building with stethascope at home and sessions at the vets

Follow Herbie's progress as his journey continues ๐Ÿ˜

If your walks don't look like this....I don't wanna know ๐Ÿคญ

In all seriousness, a walk should be peaceful. It should be filled with all the smells and investigations. It should be calm. It is your dog's time to be a dog and use their best senses to take in the world around them. It should never be rushed, and you should never get annoyed at your dog for being a dog.

A run is different. Taking your dog for a run (letting them loose in an enclosed field/letting them off lead in a park/running with them etc...) is purely for their physical fitness, not their mental enrichment. If you run your dog...always make sure you spare time for mental enrichment and the best way to do this is to allow them to sniff and watch the world whilst also engaging with you for some verbal command practice in high distraction areas.

I went to see Stanley yesterday for his initial consultation for separation anxiety. The session went very well and I was pleased to see some progress in training within the first 30 minutes!

Well done, Stanley!

๐Ÿพ Freddie ๐Ÿพ

I saw Freddie a few months ago because he was struggling with separation anxiety. When left alone, he would panic, pant, pace, bark and cry.

After weeks of training, I got a lovely update from his owner to say that she could leave him for 10 minutes without him panicking while she popped to the shop! She also said that he was beginning to fall asleep at her workplace, which is something he could never do before.

I love receiving updates like this. So happy for this lovely family and so pleased for little Freddie to be feeling much more comfortable in himself. Well done Freddie and family ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Confidence is built over time and isn't always about the big things. Sometimes, something as small as offering a paw can be stressful for a dog - especially at the vets!

Dotty didn't know how to give me her paw as this was something her owner had never taught her. So we decided to add it into her confidence clinic programme. It is one of the most simple commands to learn but can be one of the hardest ones to teach to a fearful dog. Dotty, however, soon picked it up and loves to offer me her paw now! Doesn't she have the most delicate and poised paw offering??! ๐Ÿ˜

Well done, Dotty ๐Ÿ‘

How many subtle behaviours can you notice in this clip to show Lexi would rather me not put the camera that close to her face??

Lexi is an absolute queen at body language and communication and demonstrates it perfectly here.
