🩺We are delighted to share that Emily Dutton, Director and Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology at Cheshire Cardiology, has contributed to a newly published multi-centre study in the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology.
The study explores survival in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) who received preclinical pimobendan, compared with pimobendan-naïve dogs from the onset of congestive heart failure. This important research helps build understanding around the management and interpretation of outcomes in dogs with MMVD.
A fantastic achievement and contribution to the continued development of veterinary cardiology.

🎉Feedback Friday 💯

🔥We've just found out that we're the TOP recruiters in the UK for the Signature Study! Signature is a clinical trial looking at a new medication ("investigational veterinary product") in addition to standard cardiac medications for the treatment of dogs with heart failure due to myxomatous (or degenerative) mitral valve disease.

❤️We're so pleased to be able to help shape the future for dogs with this serious disease.

‼️Avoid Heatstroke‼️

Hot weather affects our pets and it’s important to look out for them in this heat🥵.

🌞🌞🌡 Caring for cardiac patients in the heat 🌡🌞🌞

🩺 Some patients are more at risk during the heat .. including our cardiac patients.. please keep a closer eye on your patient with heart disease during this hot weather as the heat will elevate their heart rate and potentially push them into heart failure 🩺

💦 provide constant access to fresh water
🕶 provide shade
❄️ cooling mats to lie on
🌅 🌄 walk early morning or later at night when it is cooler. 🌡 In this heat missing walks completely is safest!

🚗 Never leave your dog in a car by themselves and during car journeys switch the air conditioning on.

Keep safe 🙏 🐾 ❤️

🙏🏻 Thank you to our lovely models Lacey and Nigel for the photos. They’ve been perfect patients today 🤩🐾

💪🏻 Go Lila! 🫶

Lila the lovely Pomeranian is our twelfth dog recruited on to the Signature Study 🐶🐾

Lila was a super patient who was very brave and really well behaved. 🐕

She was a joy to meet as she was very sweet and she loved to be in the nurses’ arms. ❤️ 👩‍⚕️

She even had her blood pressure measured whilst having a cuddle with nurse Nic as she seemed happiest that way 🩺🥼🐶

Lila will get all of her diagnostic tests paid for by the Sponsor of the Study 📖

She will receive all of the standard cardiac medications in addition to either a placebo medication or the investigational veterinary product 🤩

Lila will help shape the future for other dogs diagnosed with heart failure due to mitral valve disease 🫀

Go Lila 💫

😊 Feel Good Friday 🥰

💎 Meet cutie Yogi Bear 🐻

🩺 It was great to see Yogi Bear this week for his 1 month post op check. Yogi had a condition called severe pulmonic stenosis (he was born with a narrowed pulmonic valve) which carries a very poor prognosis if left untreated. He had a “balloon valvuloplasty” (keyhole surgery) 1 month ago to open up the valve. A high pressure balloon was required as the obstruction was so severe 🎈

🙌 We’re super happy to report that he is doing really well 1 month post-op with a reduced pressure gradient. He now has a mild obstruction (previously severe) which means his prognosis is now excellent🫀🩺

🌟 Well done Yogi for being a superstar patient and thank you to independent vet practice .vets for referring Yogi to us here at Cheshire Cardiology ❤️

🙌 Winning Wednesday 🏆

🐾 Meet Frankie - a very special girl who was one of our first inpatients at The Old School House after we opened 3 years ago 🏡

💫 Frankie has truly been a little star as she presented in heart failure after rupturing a chord (a known complication with mitral valve disease). She was kept in overnight, treated and monitored closely with one to one veterinary care and made a full recovery. A year later she developed kidney problems and more recently developed cancer. Despite all of this, Frankie has battled through and taken everything in her stride 🌟

❤️ We saw Frankie recently and she still has a really good quality of life and has been taken off all diuretics! Despite all of the odds being against her, and with the love and dedication from her extremely committed owner, she has just kept bouncing back like a true little trooper 💪🏻

💎 Thanks to for referring Frankie as we really do love to see this special little girl and wish her all the best for the future ☘️

❤️

🐶🫀🐶 At Cheshire Cardiology we currently have involvement with a few clinical trials and studies. 📚🔬🔍🧪

The Signature Study, looking at dogs with diagnosed mitral valve disease, stage C, currently has over 10 dogs recruited (from our clinic alone)! 🫶

These are dogs with a history of clinical signs of congestive heart failure (CHF) stabilised. 🩺🫀

These patients receive either the trial drug or a placebo which will be given alongside the standard heart medications💊.

Woody 🐶

Woody was referred to Cheshire Cardiology and diagnosed with severe Pulmonic Stenosis (PS).

This is a heart defect of the valve between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery that is thickened or fused, causing a narrowing (stenosis). This makes the right ventricle work harder and if left untreated could lead to exercise intolerance, fainting or right sided heart failure 🫀🩺

Woody came in for a procedure to treat the PS on Monday. The procedure, Balloon Valvuloplasty is a minimally invasive procedure involving inserting a balloon catheter through the jugular, guiding it to the heart and inflating it to widen the narrowed valve. 🥼🫀

Woody recovered well from this procedure and went home the next day 🏡
