Whew 😰 it’s been a relentless couple of weeks of constant calls and messages for help! Baby season is definitely in full swing now and we won’t get much (likely any) chance to stop and relax now until the autumn, never did we think the rescue would ever become what it has today and it never would without your support so THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts 💕

I realised recently I’ve been absolutely terrible at taking photos to post updates on some of the beautiful birds/animals we’ve helped so I’m trying to make a conscious effort and take more to share their stories more!

First up is this beautiful mum (a female mallard duck) who likes to nest in a local schools fully enclosed quadrant! This year is the third year we’ve attended and caught mum and her ducklings to safely relocate them back to the river where she’s meant to be. It’s no easy feat now she recognises us and instantly avoids capture but thankfully all 7 ducklings and mum were caught safely & quickly.

We relocated the family on the 6th and they are now very happy on the river and we luckily get to see them most days, we will add the video of their release in the comments section as you can’t mix videos & photos annoyingly!

We’ve also worked alongside staff at the portal hotel in Tarporley where a mum unfortunately abandoned her ducklings and so we temporarily are caring for 6 little ones who will be moving soon to another rescue until they are old enough to be released.

Just a quick note to end with we couldn’t keep doing what we do without the support of you all especially the donations to help with the cost of the rescue, so if you can help please consider donating towards rescues like these details on how can be found on the post linked below 👇🏽

‼️ Help appeal ‼️

It’s that time where we turn to you, our amazing supporters for help 🥺 we really hate having to post asking but we can’t do this alone! We desperately need to get funds up asap so we can cover the continuing costs and outgoings of the rescue especially now baby season has arrived and we’re busier than ever again!!

If you think you could help in anyway it is hugely appreciated the last thing we want is to turn down/away rescues because of funding issues it would break our hearts 💔 we are also looking at urgently purchasing another incubator from Brinsea who make incubator for wildlife and more! Because we are now needing more incubator space than we have currently!! Unfortunately these come with a large cost attached the smallest size being close to £300 and what we ideally need the next up being about £600 so we’re going to save as much as possible to get another soon.

Anyway enough of my waffling (sorry!) if you can help even just by reacting and sharing the post please 🙏🏻 do, if you would like to send some pennies towards the costs or a gift of a physical item the links are added below ⬇️, if you’d like to send a more urgently needed item we are currently running very low on the following Syringes, Kitchen towel and Swan & Duck Feed. (Edited: syringes no longer needed thank you! But chick crumb now on the urgent list!) Incubators are currently also on the list but we don’t expect anyone to purchase outright! But this shows what we save any gift cards towards.

We also can send the rescues bank details via message if you PM us for them, physical donations are always much appreciated also and puppy pads are one of our most needed items but can be bought cheapest from B&M or Pets at home so we avoid adding these to the Amazon list!

Finally I just want to end the post with another THANK YOU we honestly will never be able to put into words what the support means to us 💗🫶🥰

Let’s talk pigeons! Scroll past now if you’re not a fan of these incredible beauties.

Pigeons are at the heart of the rescue here being a huge part of what we do, we rescue and rear a large number every year. We don’t discriminate between kinds meaning we admit Wild & Domestic/pets and all sub species.

Whilst we know they are often frowned upon and seen as pests by many we have discovered the true side and found out just how incredible these small birds really are! They quickly stole our hearts and we now have a very small flock of mainly stray domestic breeds who call our home theirs too.

Usually we mainly accept babies who have sadly been separated from their nest/parents but we also help adults when we can too usually with mild illnesses or injuries.

In recent weeks we have had an influx of babies again and have been doing our best to help at Chester with the flock during a recent outbreak of canker. We spend a lot on the birds in our care on high quality feeds, hand rearing formula, routine medications, testing, vetinary care & medications. And definitely more!
For wild pigeons the aim is always to release them sadly some have to be put to be sleep when in a very bad way. We release adults back to their flock/home and all our hand-rear babies go to soft release at an amazing rescue.

I’ve added a few pics of some of the beautiful birds we’ve had the chance to care for 🥰😍

Well as usual we’ve pretty rubbish at keeping up with rescue updates! We’re still as busy as ever and with the impending doom of baby season looming over us I’m not sure how we’re going manage to this year if the sheer numbers of rescues and wildlife needing help continues. But we will persevere as much as we can and help as many birds/animals as always, this may mean we can’t help so many people further afield or attend to all calls so please bare with us!

A small update about recent swan rescues, sadly in the last few months we’ve had multiple calls to swans on the A556/blue bridge three of these were sadly already deceased the fourth swan was luckier and once we arrived they had already been escorted down the path and back to the river,
We had one of our special swans needing yet another rescue! 😂 some swans are just trouble!! He had sprained his leg but after some tlc he was released again and is back on the river causing trouble again.

We had a call to the swan in the last photo with a hook and lure attached caught in the neck, unfortunately multiple attempts to locate her were unsuccessful and then once she was the hook was gone!

We also arrived to check the flock at winsford marina one day recently to find the pile of uneaten bread in the water, firstly thinking it was foam due to the colour we went to quickly remove it when 2 gulls showed interest in packing at it. We were horrified to find it was actually bread that was completely riddled in mould 😩 this is very toxic to the birds and any bread given should never have mould the same with any food given to them we always like to say if it’s not good enough for you to eat it’s not suitable to feed to wildlife either!

Please please never give bread with mould on especially at this state, it can make them extremely poorly and also causes a condition known as pink feather which then compromises a water birds waterproofing.

Resharing,
We are at the point where we are going to have to close to intakes and not attend to rescues if we can’t boost our funds 😭💔 it’s really the last thing we want to do but we have to make sure we can afford birds currently in our care!

If all our followers sent just £1 we’d be ok and be able to purchase vital equipment we need asap🤞🏻we’re sorry to keep asking but if we didn’t we would have to close 💔

Please help us!

We need all your amazing help more than ever please, even if you only interact with our posts it helps us be seen and spread further.

January was just one expense after another with huge outgoings and nearly no donations (understandably we know it’s a long hard month), but we’ve been left with very little left and urgently need to replenish funds and order more items to restock what was used last month.

So I’m so sorry but we’re here again desperately asking for donations to help our wildlife, without your help we couldn’t do anywhere near the amount we do so thank you so much to you all.🙏🏻 🫶

The first baby of 2026 is here! Little butters was very luckily found by a friend and close supporter last Friday by a fluke chance! Sadly he couldn’t be returned to his nest so he is with us now to be reared and then released once ready!

He is a pigeon squab just a few days old in the photo he’s grown lots already with lots of feathers coming in he will soon look much different to the photo!

01/02/2026

Further to our previous update last week we recieved the official confirmation from DEFRA that the first swan did indeed have Avian influenza (HPAI H5N1) and this was likely the cause of death, sadly we lost one more at the marina and two along the river who had both been exhibiting symptoms 💔 we are still seeing some with signs and they can still excrete but infection for another few months potentially so please exhibit extreme caution still while visiting 🙏🏻

AVIAN INFLUENZA winsford update,
This is a long post but extremely important so please read till the end!

Sadly after a few random suspected cases in the flock at winsford marina/bottom flash, we now are seeing an outbreak in the birds with multiple birds exhibiting symptoms,
Whilst so far they have only been exhibited mild symptoms, sadly on Saturday afternoon one of flock passed away her body was recovered, left and reported to DEFRA, they have since collected meaning we hopefully in the next 2 weeks will recover official confirmation of the virus.

Today sadly one of the swans has been reported to be spinning in the water, so with cases on the rise we’re posting for awareness and to provide advice for the public.

Firstly we want to stress the importance of avoiding the area over the next few weeks, this is not only to protect yourself, dogs & birds at home, but also to help minimise the spread between areas and the birds.
If you do still choose to visit please follow the advice below;

* Ideally do not feed the birds, If you choose to still feed please make sure to do so over the railings in the mooring area and not the boat launch.

* DO NOT touch any birds or approach any sick looking birds. Please contact us straight away regarding and sick or dead birds.

* Report any dead birds to DEFRA Aswell as contacting us.

* If you choose to walk or exercise your dog please do not let them approach any sick birds, and ensure to thoroughly wash their paws afterwards.

* Please wash your clothes or footwear after visiting the marina and sanitise your hands, advice on disinfectant below.

Advice differs from previous years outbreaks as we now know that Avian influenza can spread to dogs also, they are at risk if allowed to make contact with sick/dead birds aswell as if they lick potentially infected poo off their paws or ingest any poo from the ground. To us we don’t think it’s with the risk to your dog’s wellbeing!

If you choose to visit still and want advice regarding the best way to protect afterwards there are lots of DEFRA approved disinfectants to kill the virus (info can be found on gov.uk) we personally use these brands Safe4 & Virkon, both can be purchased online or via Amazon. You can also purchase a spray bottle and have this travelling with you to ensure you clean footwear before entering a vehicle or leaving the marina etc, however it’s important to note if spraying near the water you do not allow any to enter the water.

Finally we understand that it can be concerning that the birds could suffer from lack of visitors during this period but we stress that this is not the case, they will still have a group of people regularly visiting and caring for the flocks, they also rely heavily on natural foods to support their recovery during this period.

Thank you for reading we appreciate it! I’ll also add a couple of frequently asked questions & answers at the end of the post.

- Can humans get avian influenza?
A) yes they can but it is rare.

- Is there not a vaccine to give the birds?A) unfortunately not, the vaccine is only available to zoos currently and it would be impossible to vaccinate and track wild birds sadly.

- Can it be treated?
A) sadly no, if isolated they can be supported however it is currently illegal to have birds with the virus in captivity which is why they are left to be monitored, there are claims of a cure however as much as we’d loved there to be one this is simply not true and there is concern that the supplement somehow could actually be causing a higher death rate after seeing a scary correlation, they can survive and often do without it and their is no evidence that shows that it makes any difference, The only thing we can do is if a bird is at the stage where it’s dying they can be pts to end and further suffering.

(Post has been edited to change wording slightly regarding treatments, due to some individuals misconstrued perception of what we said; we technically mispoke ((oops 🫣)) as there is no evidence as of yet while data is being compiled by others however theres also other reasons we personally don’t recommend it or use it, however we fully understand and accept people may still want to and make no judgement on their use of it, most believe it works as a suppressant but again we’ve seen no evidence of this and know from experience that they can fight and survive without it.
Apologies but we’re exhausted mentally and physically we’ve been dealing with flu on the river since before Christmas now, but with the wider spread outbreak in the flock that has a lot closer contact with humans & dogs we wanted to ensure a post is put out for awareness.)
