How to perform a tapeworm saliva test on your own horse! Tapeworms don’t reliably show up on a standard worm egg count, which is why a tapeworm saliva test is useful. It helps identify whether your horse has been exposed to tapeworm and whether treatment may be needed – helping to avoid unnecessary worming.💩 Worm egg counts should usually be carried out every 8–12 weeks during the grazing season, alongside appropriate tapeworm testing as part of a targeted parasite-control programme.Even better, these tests are included in our Horse Healthcare Plan for just £17.95 per month, along with all the other great preventative healthcare benefits included in the plan.

THIS IS A VET CLIENT EVENING LIKE NO OTHER! 🎄🐴
AN EVENT YOU WILL NOT WANT TO MISS!

Our Christmas Client Evening is back – with another twist!

Following the success of last year, we’re returning to The Queens Hall Theatre in Cranbrook for another evening of equine education, Christmas cheer… and perhaps a little more entertainment than you’d normally expect from a veterinary client evening! 😂

🌟 PLUS – A SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCE! 🌟😂
This year Reuben will be joined by farrier Dave Sanders. Yes, we’ve managed to persuade a farrier to turn up at a specified place AND time – so frankly, the evening is already shaping up to be something of a Christmas miracle! 😂 Alongside the fun, our vets will be getting serious about two really useful topics:

🐴 Lameness – what’s making your horse lame?
🩺 The Horse Health MOT
🐚 How well do you really know what’s “normal” for your horse?

There will, of course, be complimentary teas and coffees, festive mulled w**e and small bites, plus our charity raffle with veterinary service giveaways.

A check-in with what our vets have been up to recently…

A bit of maintenance for this high-quality dressage horse, who had started to feel a little uncomfortable.

Following assessment, we diagnosed arthritis affecting both stifles and both front coffin joints. We treated the affected joints with corticosteroid medication to reduce inflammation and help keep him comfortable and performing at his best.

We checked in with his owner a week later and he’s moving much better.

It’s always great to hear that our patients are back feeling comfortable and doing what they love.

The other day, we were delighted to welcome Andree Lorraine Ralph from Earth to our practice for a demonstration of her work, using clicker training to help horses who are nervous about vets, needles and other procedures.

We’re incredibly lucky to have such a range of talented horse professionals in our area, including Jason Webb of Your Horsemanship, Jason Webb and Tom Mitchell Equine Behaviour just down the road, Jenny Lee MMCP- Masterson Method Equine Bodywork amongst others. We love working alongside these professionals and always get so much from listening to and learning about their different approaches.

Each of these professionals offers a different range of services and brings their own experience and methods to the table, so they really are worth getting in touch with to discuss your horse and your specific needs.

A huge thank you to Andree for taking the time to show us how she works through these behavioural challenges in such a calm, kind and horse-friendly way.

If your horse is worried about injections, nervous around the vet, or has other behavioural concerns, do get in touch with Andree or one of the other excellent professionals we’re fortunate to have locally. There is a wealth of knowledge and support on our doorstep, and finding the right person and approach for you and your horse can make such a difference.

When two emergencies happen at once… teamwork matters

Being on call is unpredictable. This weekend alone, Gonçalo has already attended 8 emergency call-outs for our clients.

Today brought a different challenge: two emergency calls came in at the same time, in different directions, and both horses needed urgent veterinary attention.

Thankfully, we plan for exactly this situation.

As a team of six equine vets providing our own emergency cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our on-call vet is never truly on their own.

We have an emergency back-up system involving our whole veterinary team. If two urgent cases arise at once, the message goes out and one of our vets who isn't on call steps in.

Today, that vet was Reuben.

He was halfway through building our new kitchen table when the message came through. Tools down, table abandoned, and off he went!

So, while Gonçalo headed to an urgent colic, Reuben was on his way to a collapsed horse.

Two emergencies. Two vets. Both horses getting the urgent attention they needed.

It's also one of the reasons we're careful about the geographical area we cover. We don't want to stretch ourselves too far or make promises we can't responsibly keep. Our priority is being able to provide a prompt, dependable emergency service to the clients and horses under our care.

As for Reuben's new kitchen table… we're not sure when that's getting finished. 😅

A lovely evening out with the team!

Tonight we headed for the pub and enjoyed a fantastic team meal at The Castle Inn, right next to beautiful Bodiam Castle. Great food, gorgeous weather and, most importantly, a chance to relax and enjoy each other’s company away from the working day.

We really value getting together as a team. Spending time together outside of work helps keep us connected, strengthens the friendships behind the practice and reminds us that a close-knit team makes for a happy and supportive one.

A very enjoyable summer evening with a pretty great bunch of people!
