What are the different types of foster care?

Fostering isn’t one-size-fits-all, there are different types of foster care to suit different children and carers:
👨‍👩‍👧 Short-term: Care for a child for a few days, weeks, or months while plans for their future are made.
🏡 Long-term: A more permanent placement where a child becomes part of your family for the long haul.
🕒 Respite: A short break for families or other foster carers — a few days to recharge and support stability.
🚨 Emergency: Care at short notice for children who need a safe place right away.

In 2024 alone, 249 lives were lost to accidental drowning across the UK and Ireland.

We believe that class-based water safety education should be accessible to all children regardless of background. Our goal is to equip every family with the knowledge to stay safe in, on, and around water.

On Tuesday, 17 June, RLSS UK will host an event at Westminster with MPs and partners to highlight the urgent need for water safety education in schools. We are calling for its formal inclusion in the National Curriculum’s RHSE guidance for England.
