The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary (for guinea pigs with extra needs)

The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary (for guinea pigs with extra needs) A specialist sanctuary supporting guinea pigs with extra needs - primarily dental. Registered Charity Debbie Postles - Director. Emma-Jane Hartley - Director.

Andrew Hartley - Trustee. Catherine Wholey - Trustee. Emma Gordon - Trustee. Jennifer Cox - Trustee. Steve Turner - Trustee/Charity Treasurer. The Excellent Adventure Sanctuary enables guinea pigs who have ongoing medical issues to live a normal, happy life, whilst they receive the veterinary care they need. The Sanctuary specialises in the management of dental issues and the results achieved have

been amazing! All veterinary treatment is carried out by Simon and Kim Maddock of the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic, Northampton. However, to enable this service to be offered to even more piggies with extra needs, funds need to be raised. Places at the Sanctuary can be offered on a short term, long term or permanent basis and the programme of supportive care is individually tailored to each piggy's needs.

After feeling so much more hopeful that we’d got Shelly’s thyroid level under control, she suddenly started to drop weight again, and whilst her excessive thirst wasn’t quite as bad as it had previously been, she had started to drink more again. Yesterday she went to see uncle Simon for another blood test! Her thyroid, whilst not back in normal range, is now around 60, whereas it was over 100 before she started on medication!

Her Thyronorm dose has now been increased to the 2.5mg dose, twice a day. I’ll be monitoring her carefully, as we don’t want her level to go too far the other way, making her hypothyroid. Hopefully we can get her onto an appropriate dose, that will keep her stable and hopefully her weight will increase! ❀

Clover was looking a bit under the weather today, with grunty breathing and lethargy, so a vet appointment was booked.

By the time we got there her breathing sounded pretty normal, but uncle Simon very quickly found she had a large urethral stone! He managed to pop it out, whilst Clover protested loudly! I’m sure she will be feeling much better with that gone! Her skin is also very scurfy, so she’s had a Stronghold spot on applied and Simon said her hair isn’t as nice as Claudia Winkleman’s, so no Head and Shoulders advert for Clover! 😂

She will have a few days of Metacam and hopefully won’t need antibiotics! I’m thinking the stone was probably making her feel very uncomfortable! 😳

Sorry for the lack of updates on Halley aka Bee! At her vet appointment, on Tuesday, Simon couldn’t find a definitive reason for her collapse, although her kidney with the huge cyst felt very large, with the other feeling a normal size. She was given some sub-cutaneous fluids and it was a case of watch and wait and see how things developed. I spent yesterday feeling like I was just keeeping her alive, which is something I’ve never wanted to do with the piggies of TEAS! What we do is about ensuring they have good quality life, despite their various health issues and Halley wasn’t wanting to eat and was fighting the syringe and generally looking very sad. When I went to bed last night, I felt today was about ending her suffering! However, this morning Halley, although still very weak, is enjoying some romaine lettuce. I certainly don’t feel we are out of the woods, but I feel a tiny bit more optimistic!

Please continue to keep Halley in your thoughts! Thank you!
