Speaking to a lovely client of ours who is also a head nurse of A&E.
She shared with me that cases of dog related injuries & bites greatly increase during the summer months. Especially with children.
Just like us in the heat, dogs can become irritable and quickly agitated.
I always like to describe it as their anxiety bucket. They keep adding to it until it over flows. That can be the bite stage.
A dog biting you is really stressful to them and in most cases really is a last resort for them. They don't want to bite you ! But they feel like it's their only option.
As to them they have already communicated to you many times that they are not comfortable or happy in this situation. Some signs more subtle than others.
Some poochies may escalate to this point quicker than others. Some factors affect this and are not limited to * Age * Behaviour / previous trauma * bite history * medical conditions or being in pain.
Signs to look for (and not limited to)
* Panting
* Lip licking
* Turning away from you
* Cowering
* Being submissive (lying on their back and showing their belly)
* Low and fast tail way (tail wagging not always a positive)
* Growling and showing teeth
* Grumbling or barking
* Starring At you
* Body becoming rigid and like they are playing musical statues.
Please always be aware of your poochies body language. Unfortunately for us they can't talk but those who know, can understand their communication.
Here are some top tips to avoid stress escalation;
💕 That they have access to clean and fresh water. It is recommended to change more regularly in this heat.
💕 Make sure they have a safe / cool space to call their own. And do not allow children or adults to invade that space.
💕 Only take walks when it is cool enough.
💕 Teach your children the mutual respect of their pooch. It's not okay to let them climb on them. No one wants that!
💕 Make sure you set the boundaries with anyone visiting your home. Your house is their home too!
