Please find some helpful hot weather advice from Towcester Vets below
🌟🥵 Heat Wave Help! 🥵🌟
🐾 The sunny weather seems to be landing with a bang this weekend and hanging around for most of the next week. Although brilliant for the kids on school holidays, it's worth a reminder that we might need to take some extra care with our pets.
🐾 Campaigns highlighting the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke and potential death from leaving dogs in hot cars have been very successful at getting the message out, but do you know that we see just as many cases of heat stroke in dogs that have been out on walks in the hot weather?
🐾 Firstly, we need to remember that the situation isn't the same for all dogs. Some individuals may be at greater risk from warm weather and so extra care is needed. These include:
🔻Young puppies
🔻Senior dogs
🔻Brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs
🔻Those with heart disease
🔻Those with lung disease
🔻Overweight dogs
🔻Those with thick coats
🐾 All walks are not the same either, walks where your dog can paddle or swim are lower risk, as are those in shady woods.
🐾 PetPlan has produced a chart to advise when it is too warm to walk and it provides very sensible guidance. However, you know your dog best and it might be that for one of the factors above, or just that they seem to struggle more, that you are even more cautious.
🐾 Remember, if in doubt, don't go out. Training and games can be utilised to help keep them occupied and tire them out without running around, as can paddling pools and frozen treats. And where possible walks can be timed for early mornings or late evenings when the weather is cooler.
🐾 Our pets with light coloured fur or areas with no or thin fur may need pet safe suncream applied if they are going to spend time outside.
🐾 Don't forget the small pets! Make sure environmental temperatures are minimised as much as possible, there is plenty of shade available and lots of water sources. Wrapped pet safe ice packs in or around accomodation may be appreciated.
🐾 However careful we are, sometimes our pets will start to overheat. Please make sure they always have access to shade and water and keep a close eye on them. If they are panting heavily, collapse, their gums or tongues appear blue/purple, become lethargic, become disoriented or start vomiting please immediately cool them with cold water and contact a vet.
