You may have noticed that this page has not been active this year. I have been too busy with my main business (Katie Mortimore Photography ) to be able to spend the time needed for Between the Ears so for the time being once current stock is exhausted I will be halting physical sales (digital products will stay online).

I love the planners and they are still the most comprehensive and adaptable journal for equestrians on the market. They started as a covid project but as life now returns to normal spare time for side projects is lacking! Hopefully we will be back in the future but for now order whilst you still can AND get 50% off using the code BLACKFRIDAY at checkout

There are no 2023 dated inserts but there are undated so buy several and you are sorted for several years to come at a bargainous price.

Head over to the website now to order whilst stocks last.

Do you cross your fingers for good luck at events or do you make your own luck?

I love the phrase “the harder you work the luckier you get”

There is always an element of luck in horse sports but the harder you work to prepare yourself and your horse the better you will cope if conditions are not quite ideal.

I remember when I had a light bulb moment about lateral work. It was thanks to a lesson on a schoolmaster with the great Jane Bartle Wilson.

It really was one of those lessons that things just clicked and made sense. I love schoolmaster lessons for that. But has to be a true schoolmaster. A horse who if asked correctly does the right thing, but if asked wrong doesn’t, but also doesn’t get cross about it!

Some people think a schoolmaster is a horse who will look after a novice rider, take a joke so to speak, fill in the gaps where the rider lacks knowledge or skill. Those aren’t schoolmasters those are unicorns, saints and worth their weight in gold. But they also don’t necessarily always teach a rider as much as a schoolmaster. They will teach confidence but not necessarily feel.

Both them and true schoolmasters are incredibly rare and incredibly valuable.

Do you own one? Or like me do you have the occasional (or not so occasional) lessons on schoolmasters?

I have had the lessons as they allow you to find the buttons on a horse who already knows. This knowledge then allows you to find the buttons on your own horse your training far more easily as you know where they should be.

How do you keep everything organised? I'm naturally not an organised person so when it comes to important things I try and be super organised especially when I have other people relying on me.

So for work meetings I will always (as far as traffic allows!) arrive early. Once a whole day! 🙈🤣

For horses, well of course I designed the planner for a reason but I also like to keep my competition gear organised. I don't have a lorry currently so my riding kit lives at home in my lovingly referred to 'crap cupboard'. 🤣

Inside lives many a thing but on top and first to hand are my competition kit bags. I have a matching kit and boot bag from which I love. The kit bag is HUGE but is one great big compartment so I have inside clear storage bags. I have different ones for different things. From spare hairnets and socks to cleaning kit. I always keep a spare set of clothes in it in addition to a spare bridle (yes really and if you read my posts regularly you know I've had to rely on it 😂) and more.

It's great having everything organised as I only ever have to grab the two bags and I know I have everything for me all ready to go.

Super Sunday! Who has been out competing this weekend? Who has spent time just enjoying their horse?

Schools are back tomorrow after the Easter break. Does that mean more time for you to ride or less? The nights are getting lighter with sunset at 8pm now so riding after school/work is far more doable.

"People rarely succeed unless they are having fun in what they're doing" - Dale Carnegie

We all ride horses because we love them, but do you have fun with all the elements of the sport?

I would love to compete at top level SJ or eventing but I know for me once past a certain level it isn't fun. I've always dreamed about it but as I grew up I realised I have a natural limit where I start feeling uncomfortable. For showjumping 1m25 (on a scope horse) yep bring it on, but 1m30 nope not fun anymore. For eventing Novice yep can do that, Intermediate nope not even going to try it thanks.

I could push myself and step out of that comfort zone but I don't think it's worth it. I'm competitive but there is enough at the levels I feel confident and safe at that I have no problem staying at or sometimes below that level depending on the horse and circumstances.

It always surprises me how negatively some people are towards 'pot hunters' those that don't move up the levels especially at the low levels. Yes there may well be those that are just out for the rosettes but there may be many like me who have accepted their personal fun limits which could be anything from a walk trot test, 80cm eventing or not competing at all.

It should be remembered that success does not necessarily mean rosettes and prizes. Success for one person may be just going down the centre line or through the start, another it may be to go double clear, and for another it's winning. Each can be equally rewarding as the other to that individual.

What personal limits do you have with horses? Do you not hack as it's boring? Do you dread the idea of jumping a fence? Zero judgement from me whatever the answer. It may be that currently you chose not to ride entirely.

A simple haynet, such an innocent simple thing. But they're not are they?!

Filling them must easily be one of the most hated jobs of the equestrian world.

But the real question is do you weigh yours?

I remember in my pony club days it was drilled into us that we should know exactly how much hay or haylage we were feeding our horses. For my A care many years ago I can remember being able to recite the weights suitable for different heights and types of horses and ponies.

BUT in the several yards I've now been on, including professional yards, haynets are NEVER weighed. So do you?

Yes I admittedly don't weight my nets, in fact my preference if to feed forage loose on the ground, but that doesn't actually excuse not weighing it. My excuse is that I feed ad-lib forage and in winter ad lib hay is given in the field so it's impossible to weigh that accurately.

But it's worth thinking about especially if you have a horse that needs its waistline closely monitored. Weighing doesn't just have to be about weight control though. If you weigh your forage each day you can monitor what is being eaten and what is being left. So did your horse leave a load of hay last night because actually you gave them an inordinately large amount? Or was there an issue?

So do you weigh your forage? If so why?

Bay, grey, black, chestnut, pink which is your favourite horse colour?

Ok trying to catch you out slightly there 😁

I have a vast collection of fabulous pony pens now that go out with some orders. I actually do have all of the colours mentioned and more!

If you're lucky you may get one with your Between The Ears planner

I think Laura forgot something? 🙈🤣

Actually nope this was taken at a few years ago during a special ba****ck showjumping class. I think you would be forgiven for thinking the saddle had been photoshopped out though her position is good. BUT I think we've all forgotten something at an event.

Most recently I forgot my dressage bridle. Thankfully I keep a spare in my competition bag but we had to dig out the hole punch and use a different snaffle as my spare was different. As a kid I remember leaving my saddle at home, my mum had to dash back to get it but thankfully it was only 20 minutes away and she was able to get back in time for me to compete.

What was the most important thing you have forgotten when going to a competition? What did you do?

It takes a village, never is that more true than when talking about the training and welfare of a horse.

To ride a horse never mind compete requires a whole team to come together and perform their part.

Breeders, vets, farriers, physios, instructors, yard owners and more they all have their place.

Who couldn't you be without on your equine journey? Give them a shout out in the comments

One discipline that can be overlooked is quite possibly the most glamorous and stylish, Sidesaddle.

It's not just about showing either, you can compete in most disciplines side saddle although some affiliated bodies do restrict. I've watched some particularly brave and skilled side saddle riders jump higher than most will ever do astride. Will have to dig out those photos another time.

I've had the joy to ride side saddle a few times now, although not had the opportunity to own my own saddle. Walk and trot I can do, canter on the right rein, yep, canter on the left rein errrr 🙈🤣

I am lucky enough to live locally to the amazing Lucinda Sims of who has given me some tuition when I've had time. Honestly the best side saddle instructor in the UK so if you want to try with your horse I would recommend her any day of the week 😁
