"People rarely succeed unless they are having fun in what they're doing" - Dale Carnegie
We all ride horses because we love them, but do you have fun with all the elements of the sport?
I would love to compete at top level SJ or eventing but I know for me once past a certain level it isn't fun. I've always dreamed about it but as I grew up I realised I have a natural limit where I start feeling uncomfortable. For showjumping 1m25 (on a scope horse) yep bring it on, but 1m30 nope not fun anymore. For eventing Novice yep can do that, Intermediate nope not even going to try it thanks.
I could push myself and step out of that comfort zone but I don't think it's worth it. I'm competitive but there is enough at the levels I feel confident and safe at that I have no problem staying at or sometimes below that level depending on the horse and circumstances.
It always surprises me how negatively some people are towards 'pot hunters' those that don't move up the levels especially at the low levels. Yes there may well be those that are just out for the rosettes but there may be many like me who have accepted their personal fun limits which could be anything from a walk trot test, 80cm eventing or not competing at all.
It should be remembered that success does not necessarily mean rosettes and prizes. Success for one person may be just going down the centre line or through the start, another it may be to go double clear, and for another it's winning. Each can be equally rewarding as the other to that individual.
What personal limits do you have with horses? Do you not hack as it's boring? Do you dread the idea of jumping a fence? Zero judgement from me whatever the answer. It may be that currently you chose not to ride entirely.
