Let's talk about Crufts.
It's controversial, and I can understand why.
I make no secret of the fact that I show my dogs and have done for 13 years.
I have a love/hate relationship with showing (the early mornings contribute greatly to the hate part).
There is no joy in showing a dog that doesnโt enjoy it. The cost, early starts and miles travelled arenโt worth it if your dog hates it.
Most people involved in showing are good, honest people who care deeply about their dogs and their breed.
Iโm proud to have healthy, fit and functional dogs who still enjoy their days out at shows.
Morgon lights up at a show. Heโs 10 and still winning against dogs a fraction of his age. Ruby bounced around the ring like a puppy at 11 years old.
Show dogs are taught to be handled and examined from a young age, which I believe is a useful skill for all dogs.
Do I see handling I don't agree with? Absolutely. There are handlers I wouldn't let within 10ft of my dogs.
Are there judges that could do better? Yes. I even have a small blacklist of judges I wonโt enter under because I didnโt like how they handled my dogs.
Crufts can be a stressful environment for some dogs, and we have a responsibility to protect their welfare.
That responsibility also extends beyond the show ring.
Crufts and dog showing are often criticised for exaggerated conformation, breeding practices and welfare concerns. Some of those conversations are important and necessary. Like any community, dog showing isnโt perfect and there will always be areas that need improving.
But many people involved care deeply about the health, longevity and happiness of their dogs. Behind the televised rings are owners researching bloodlines, prioritising health testing and celebrating the breeds they love.
For me, showing has never been about rosettes. Itโs about spending time with my dogs and enjoying a hobby together.
My dogs owe me nothing. If they didnโt enjoy it, we simply wouldnโt do it.
The conversations around Crufts should continue, but they should also acknowledge the many people genuinely trying to do right by their dogs.
At the end of the day, their welfare and happiness should always come first๐
